Craft Gossip

This is kind of old news, as it was reported last month, but is very important to the industry. The mill, which was founded in 1821 on the banks of Higgins Stream in this Somerset County town, is believed to be the oldest continuously operating yarn mill in the U.S. This company has been in operation for 186 years as a yarn mill and was used as a setting in [tag]Stephen King[/tag]’s movie “[tag]Graveyard Shift[/tag]” . [tag]Bartlettyarns[/tag] is most famous for its Fisherman yarns that are lanolin-rich for softness and weather resistance. Select fleeces are blended carefully to produce a large array of colors in heathers, marls, tweeds and solids. All of the company’s yarns are spun on the woolen system, using a mule spinning frame. “Mule spun” yarns have a distinctive appearance and desirable homespun qualities, compared with the more common worsted spun yarns.

According to the [tag]Bangor Daily News[/tag], the mill was purchased by customers of the mill and will continue to operate.
