Knitting Techniques Bind Off / Cast Off

Easy, simple bind off:

  • Knit two stitches. Insert the point of the left-hand needle into the first stitch on the right hand needle. With the point of the left hand needle, pull this stitch over the second stitch on the righ hand needle. Knit the next stitch and repeat until you have bound off the required amount of stitches.

Ribbing Bind Off

  • Work the first two stitches as presented (if K1, P1 rib, then knit the first stitch, and purl the second). Lift the purl stitch over the knit stitch on the right hand needle. Knit/Purl the next stitch as it is presented and proceed until the required amount of stitches are bound off.

Stretchy Bind Offs

  • Knit two stitches together through back loop. Return single stitch to the left hand needle. Knit the next two stitches through the back look. Repeat until the required number of stitches are bound off.
  • In the first stitch, draw up a loop and leave it on the right needle. Do not slip the stitch off the left needle. Now knit the first two stitches on the left needle together, slip the first one of those two off the left needle, and pass the first stitch of the two on the right needle over the second one. Yarn forward.  Purl the next two stitches together, slip off the first of the two on the left needle. On the right needle, with the yarn still forward , pass the first stitch over the second. Yarn back.  Continue to alternate this with yarn forward (purling) and yarn back (knitting).

Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Bind Off

  • Break yarn, leaving a tail about 4 times as long as the circumference of the sock. Thread a tapestry needle. Sew forward (right to left) through two stitches as if to purl, leave the stitches on. Sew backward (left to right) through one stitch as if to knit and remove the stitch.
Repeat until you’ve bound off the required amount of stitches.

Suspended Bind Off

  • Knit two stitches.  *Slip the first stitch over the second stitch, but do not drop it from the left hand needle. Knit the next stitch. Slip both stitches off the left needle, leaving two stitches remaining on the right hand needle.* Repeat * to *.
