Giveaway: 50 Garter Stitch Gifts to Knit

August 29, 2016 by Sarah White

giveaway 50 garter stitch projects

Cindy is the winner!

It’s my birthday today, so it seemed appropriate to offer a book all about gift knitting as the giveaway for this week.

50 Garter Stitch Gifts to Knit is a compilation book from a large number of knitwear designers, featuring projects that are all or mostly worked in Garter Stitch or one of its variations, and all of which use Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted.

Here you will find cowls, cardis, blankets, wraps, hats, capelets, toys, booties, scarves, slippers, booties and more (you can check out all the projects on Ravelry). Though the projects skew toward knitting for women and babies, there are some more neutral things as well and this book should cover a lot of people on your list, as well as teach you some tricks you might not have known Garter Stitch could do

If you’d like a chance to win a copy of this book, leave a comment on this post before the end of the day Sunday, Sept. 4. I’d love to know if you have a favorite birthday memory or something you love (or would love) to do to celebrate. My husband took the day off so we’re going out to breakfast after we take our daughter to school and I hope having a somewhat lazy day around prepping for her birthday (which is next Monday).

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing, and good luck!

This year on my birthday, we are attending the Garden State Sheep
And Wool Festival. I’m sure that there will be birthday yarn purchases!

My favorite birthday memory is when my mother brought my birthday present to my second grade class on my birthday.
It was a Skipper doll, Barbie’s little sister. My older sister had a Barbie and Midge doll. I still have all 3 dolls at my house some 52 years later.

My favorite birthday memory was when my mom made me a circus merry-go-round cake. I don’t even know how old I was but I remember the cake.

I don’t necessarily have a favorite birthday memory. I just enjoy the opportunity for friends and family to get together to make more memories.

The best birthday for me & my kids (who are grown), is to go out to our favorite Mexican restaurant. We eat until are bellies are bursting-great fun & oh so good!

Not my favorite birthday, but I remember when no one remembered my birthday. I think I was 13, so I got out all my old saved cards to put on the mantle piece. Breakfast sounds a good idea but my husband always gets up first and makes his before I hit the shower so he never wants to do breakfast. Hope you have a good birthday.

I never had a birthday party until my freshman year in college when the two upper class gals threw a party for two of us who had birthdays in November. I had parties for my kids.

for my 25th birthday, my roommates decided to throw me a surprise birthday party. The day of the party, they asked one of our neighbors to take me on an “errand” with him to get me out of the apartment. while we were running the errand, we ran into one of his friends who was throwing a BBQ and invited us to it, so we went to it. my neighbor had forgotten he was supposed to bring me back for my party. I ended up missing my party…lol

    Happy Birthday.
One year I was working on my birthday. The manager said I should take a break, maybe outside since the weather was especially nice. Outside was my best friend and his great Dane, both in tuxs with birthday cake and balloons. He’d set it all up with my boss. Just the thoughtfulness of it.

My best birthday memory was when we had a surprise bbq, for my adult daughter. We surprised her alright but the best surprise was the look on her face when she realize that we were grilling burgers on her new grill.

Happy Birthday. I’ll share this memory: A few years ago I left the house for a walk on what I expected to be a completely forgotten birthday, since I’d carefully been keeping mum on the subject. Half a block from home I found a $20 bill. Turned the corner and got a free chiropractic adjustment and massage from a newly opened office. Got home and found I’d won a free movie ticket. What a wonderful birthday – lots of surprise gifts, all without anyone reminding me I was a year older.

My birthday is in January, less than 2 weeks after Christmas. My parents always made a special effort to recognize that my birthday was not an extension of Christmas despite all of the “this is a combined birthday & Christmas gift” notes. My birthday tradition included a special cake and some pink roses ??

I hope you have a great birthday!

My favorite birthday memory was when my husband took me on a vacation to Grand Bahama Island. Wonderful diving, got to pet a shark, had a great time. My least favorite birthday memory occurred when I was turning eleven and my mother forgot it was my birthday. My sister reminded her of it late in the evening.

As my birthday was Christmas Eve, everyone always remembered it and I always received many birthday wishes but the funniest presents were from my five younger brothers and sisters. I remember getting one earing for birthday and the other for Christmas or one shoe for each day or one glove for each day. It was funny, no surprises though what I was going to get from them for Christmas. PS I love knitting so this book would be lovely

My family always waited for my August 2 birthday to eat the first sweet corn of the season. I was raised on a farm in Iowa, and on my birthday my aunt, uncle and cousins would drive out for a wonderful meal, along with cake and ice cream. My aunt, uncle, and one cousin are gone now, and I live in another state, but I will forever remember them with fondness. And I would love to get your free book.

I hope you have a wonderful time celebrating the anniversary of your birth. Thanks for including us in the gifts! The ability to look at pictures of all 50 projects, over at etsy, is brilliant. I like the baby garland, buttoned capelet (I think I would add some duplicate stitch), and corded scarf (I think I would add some shiny beading).

Have you read?

Book Review: Knitovation Stitch Dictionary

There’s always room for more stitch dictionaries on your shelf, but Andrea Rangel’s Knitovation Stitch Dictionary is unlike those stitch pattern books you might already own. That’s because this one is full of colorwork stitch patterns rather than textured stitches, lace or cables, so the designs are ripe for adding to hats, sweaters and other projects with a stockinette stitch background.

The book starts with a quick introduction to knitting colorwork that’s also unlike what you’ve probably seen before, because it’s less about the colors themselves and more about the kinds of fibers you choose, how the yarn is prepared and the gauge you’re working at and how those things all change the look of a design.

Most of the book is filled with motif designs and swatches. The motifs were designed and named by Andrea’s husband Sean, who is an artist and brings a bit of whimsy to the designs.

You’ll find some classic looking leaves and flowers, mosaics and waves, but also rubber ducks, penguins, puzzle pieces, cherries and cows, snails and teapots, eyeballs and chess pieces, to name a few. Many of the designs also have funny names, like a fish named toilet bound, or cats in suits called corporate fat cat.

Of course you can use the designs in any way you want on any project you like, but there are also three patterns in the book — for a hat, a sweater and a pair of fingerless gloves — plus discussion of how the motifs were added, adjusting patterns for a different size or gauge, and adding your own motifs.

If you like adding a bit of colorwork to otherwise plain projects that other people have designed, or you’re ready to start making your own designs with fun motifs, this book is a great place to start. The fun and funny motifs are sure to inspire you to want to pick up your needles and add a little more color to your projects.

About the book: 160 pages, hardcover, 150+ motifs and three knitting patterns. Published 2023 by Interweave, suggested retail $28.
