Congrats to numbers 16 and 34, G.K. and Lennette, for winning this giveaways!
Here’s another really funny special issue from the folks at Interweave. This one, The Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits, is technically a special issue of PieceWork magazine and features 27 patterns for “upstairs, downstairs and the troops.”
There are also educational essays about the real home where Downton Abbey is filmed; the popularity of wealthy American women marrying titled English men; the life of Mrs. Beeton, who wrote an incredibly influential book on household management; a look at knitting for the troops during World War I; and the importance of the Women’s Land Army in keeping the country afloat and fed during that time.
Some of my favorite patterns are the simple but beautiful Lighter-than-air “chiffon” Blouson by Vicki Square, the close-fitting lace Luxurious Lacy Overdress by Anniken Allis, Laurie Sundstrom’s Gentleman’s Golfing Stockings with their pretty stranded cuffs, Annie Modesitt’s perfect striped Footman’s Vest, the feminine Half-day Off Mitts by Sara Lamb and the fun Two-in-One: Warm Hat or Cravat by Anne Carroll Gilmour, which cleverly folds into itself for a super-warm hat.
The Lady Denman Vest by Joanna Johnson, which honors a British baroness who became director of the Women’s Land Army, is really lovely, too, with lace panels along the bottom and up the center.
It’s a really fun magazine if you’re a fan of the show or of the time period, and I have two copies to give away.
The winners must live in the United States because of copyright restrictions, and will be chosen randomly from people who comment on this post before the end of the day Sunday, Oct. 27. If you watch Downton Abbey, why don’t you tell me who your favorite character is?
(Oh, by the way, I never announced it, but the winner of Knit Your Own Moustache was commenter 18, Brittany, who said her favorite costume was the time she went as a photo booth strip. Awesome!)
