Knitting Techniques – Increasing and Decreasing in Your Knitting
Increasing and decreasing 1 stitch in from the edges, rather than right on the edge make for a lot easier seaming.
Purl Increasing:
- Purl into front and back of first stitch, then purl into front and back of 2nd stitch. This works best with a sport weight or thinner yarn. For bulkier weight yarns, do a knit cast-on of 2 stitches, then purl across the row (including those 2 sts).
- Purl the first stitch on the needle, then “make 1″ by lifting the bar between the 1st and 2nd stitches, putting it on the left hand needle and then purling that stitch.
- The increases could also be made by purling into the 1st stitch on the needle, purling into the bar between the first 2 stitches which were on the needle (”make 1″), purling into the 2nd stitch on the needle, purling into the bar between the 2nd and 3rd stitches which were on the needle, and continuing to purl the rest of the sts on the needle. This might produce a flatter result than #1 above.
