If you’ve been on the Internet at all in the past couple of weeks, you’ve probably seen patterns for the messy bun hat, which is basically a hat where you don’t do all the shaping or close up the top so that your giant messy bun (or a ponytail) can stick up out of the top.
Never ones to let crocheters have all the fun, it was only a matter of time before a knit messy bun hat appeared on the scene (I want to make one, but holiday knitting has had me in other projects).
Knits’ End has all the details on this easy-to-make hat, in a bulky version you might even still have time to knit before Christmas. It’s worked flat is Seed Stitch and is really quick and easy to do. And I won’t tell if you make it for yourself instead of gifting it.
Are you a fan of the messy bun? Would you wear a hat like this? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Yes! I love these hats. Long ago and far away, there was a “ponytail” hat, which I loved and now it’s being revisited with a vengeance. I’m delighted to have these hats once again. Great for wearing with ponytails and buns, warm, comfy and pretty to wear.
