Knitting for your Pet

April 17, 2007 |

How many people have pets, raise your hands, don’t be shy. How many knit for their pets? I have a very small dog who is always cold. Living in Michigan doesn’t help, so he wears sweaters. The sweaters get expensive to constantly purchase and don’t always fit properly. And he must be Houdini as he always manages to get one leg out.

What to do?

I found a copy of Inknitters dated Fall 2006 and it just happened to have an article called “Dog gone and other Tails” written by Diane Piwko.

This article provides in detail how to measure your animal and create a well-fitted garment. Inknitters is a magazine that provides information for hand knitters and machine knitters and many patterns have instructions for both methods. Ms. Piwko provided instructions for both methods. Very detailed!

If this is too much for you, in the same magazine is a “generic” pet sweater pattern also designed by Ms. Piwko using medium weight worsted yarn, or a number 4 weight. The pattern is provided in a hand knit version and a machine knit version.

What more could your pooch ask for?
