Tired of making [tag]socks[/tag] with DPN? Want to try something different? Try the [tag]Magic Loop[/tag] method of using [tag]circular needles[/tag].

The Magic Loop technique has been around for ages, but it’s best explained in a booklet published by Fiber Trends titled “The Magic Loop”. The book is available at most yarn shops. The Fiber Trends Website has a list of yarn shops that sell their patterns and booklets.

Basically you cast on your stitches on a 40″ circular needle, pinch the cable between the two center stitches, and spread the stitches over the two needles. Arrange the stitches so half are on one needle and the other half are on the second needle. Then you pull the needle in back out, sliding the stitches onto the cable, now you have another loop of cable, and you knit the stitches from the front needle. The Magic Loop booklet continues to explain creating the heel flap and knitting through to the toe. This method starts at the calf and ends at the toe.

There are websites that explain this with pictures such as KnitWit.

If you get really brave, you can do two socks at the same time from the toe up. If you use the newest type of painted yarn like Supersocke 100 or Regia, it is best to do both at the same time to match the stripes/design.

I use the magic loop to make socks. I can only do 48 sts and want to to larger socks. How do I change the heel flap, heel and pick up the rest?
