Knitters — and crafters of all sorts — love to watch how-to videos to pick up new techniques, and a lot of people are watching the videos of Judy Graham, whose Knitting Tips by Judy You Tube page boasts nearly 35,000 subscribers.
Graham is a 78-year-old mother of two who has made a living selling her knits to places like Barneys (where she sold garments so small she wouldn’t even call them sweaters in “the hippie era”) and making knits for television and movie productions.
Her son writes about her in a piece for USA Today and notes that “she recently made new sweaters for talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and regularly outfits the Bernadette character on CBS’The Big Bang Theory.”
She said she learned to knit from her mother when she was 13 and “took to it really easily” though “I never thought it would be what I did in life, my career.”
She said she has always liked knitting because “it sort of takes me away from anything else.”
Her son actually sparked the idea for the knitting videos with an article he did about seniors sharing their expertise on blogs. She went with videos because of the ease of showing knitting techniques that way.
She says she’s proof that older people do use technology, and I say she’s pretty awesome.
Have you watched any of Judy’s videos?
