You might not think that something as basic as stripes would have any sort of history, but according to weaver Sarah Cross, there’s a pretty interesting story behind stripes.
Writing on the Buttons and Paint… blog, she says that stripes were once thought to be the work of the devil, and just looking at striped animals could set you up for eternal damnation.
Stripes were illegal in France in the 1300s, which got the Carmelite monks into a bit of trouble with the pope when they went to visit.
Luckily these days we’re all about stripes in weaving and knitting. But it’s fun to look back and see how far we’ve come!
