Book Review: Modern Baby

May 9, 2023 by Sarah White

I’m pretty sure you can’t have enough baby knitting patterns (if you need more we’ve got a baby knitting ebook that’s on sale right now!!).

Modern Baby: 6 Outfits to Warm Your Favorite Crawler by Judy Lamb, adds a few must-knit items to your baby knitting list, with adorable rompers and matching hats.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll find:

  • All of a Twist uses twisted stitches (sort of like making a one stitch cable without using a cable needle) running down the front of a long-sleeved onesie. The hat has two twists as well, and an adorable little I-cord topper.
  • B-A-B-Y Love uses textured stitches to spell baby down the front of this romper. The coordinating hat features a heart motif and a pom pom.
  • Diamond Brocade has a textured diamond pattern on the romper and the hat. This one also has long sleeves.
  • Framed Cable features a braided cable with textured zig zags on the sides, and a coordinating beret for baby.
  • Lace Accent has simple diagonal lines of lace running up the middle, paired with a simple, rolled brim stockinette stitch hat (faux fur pompom optional)
  • Mixed Berry is worked with a self-striping yarn; the hat has no decreases for the top of the head. Tassels embellish the edges of the hat.

If you click into the Amazon listing, linked above, you can see photos of all the patterns.

All the projects are rated for intermediate knitters and they all use worsted weight yarn, which is nice for baby things because it helps them to work up before the baby grows out of them.

Speaking of growing, each pattern is available in five sizes ranging from 0-3 months to 12-18 months.

The back of the book includes a little knitting instruction for things like increases, decreases and short rows.

This book is super cute and the patterns are both pretty and useful for new parents.

About the book: 64 pages, paperback, 6 patterns. Published 2019 by Leisure Arts. Suggested retail $14.99

Stitch Your Favorite Fruit on a Sweater

The other day I saw a post from Pinterest about trends for summer and it said one of them was “cultivating whimsy.”

Well, I don’t know where Pinterest has been all this time, but we’ve been cultivating whimsy here at Craft Gossip for a long time. I love sharing projects that are a little different, things that make you smile when you see them, and will make you smile when you knit them and wear them or use them.

Such it is with the Tutti Frutti tee knitting pattern from Bea Creative Knits.

This cute little baby tee is worked top down in the round with contiguous shoulder construction to shape the sleeve caps. There are short rows for the neckline and folded hems with picot edging at the hemline, neckline and edges of the sleeves.

All of this would be great on its own, but then there’s the addition of a super cute fruit icon, which is added with duplicate stitch. There are a lot of options, including strawberry, banana, orange, cherries, watermelon, lemon, blueberries, kiwi, peach, dragon fruit, apple and pear, so it’s likely you can add on your favorite fruit.

It is offered in eight sizes, to fit a bust measurement ranging from 28-30 inches (71-76 cm) to 56-58 inches (142-147 cm). The design is meant to be worn with around 6.3 inches/16 cm of negative ease, but you can choose the fit you prefer. There’s also optional bust and waist shaping included in the pattern if you want to make it even curvier.

This is considered an advanced beginner or intermediate project because of all the skills involved, but it’s sure to be a lot of fun even if some of these techniques are new to you.

Grab a copy of the pattern for yourself form Bea Creative Knits on Etsy.
