Cable knitting is really fun because, like a lot of techniques in knitting, just a couple of simple skills can take you from basic to amazingly intricate designs.
Cable knitting is just a process of working stitches in an order other than how the present themselves on the needle. All you have to know to make cables is how to slip stitches and where to hold your cable needle while you’re working the other stitches.
Of course cables can get a lot more complicated than these simple six-stitch crosses, but if you’re new to cable knitting this is a great place to start.

I covered both cable front (right slanting) and cable back (left slanting) cables in this video. Practice both by making napkin rings, or even a simple scarf.
Do you like to knit cables? I’d love to hear about some of your favorite projects.
