I love the look of cable knitting patterns but I’ve never done a lot with them. A braid or staghorn cable is about as exciting as it gets over here. I’d like to change that so I pulled together this list of slightly more intermediate cable knitting patterns for you to try if you want to boost your cable skills or just want something different to knit.
While this one still has simple cables, I’m including the cabled afghan from Lion Brand on this list because it’s a big project that might feel like a boost in skill level even though it’s still rated easy. This one uses worsted weight yarn, so pull out all your stash to make a great striped cabled blanket.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Hedera Headband from Simona Varga on Ravelry is a pretty small project but it has a somewhat complex Celtic cable design. It could be a fun challenge to up your cable knitting game, and would make a great gift, too.
Mountain Candi’s Knit Beanie pattern features a pretty (and easy) lattice cable pattern. It uses two-stitch cables so you can even practice cabling without a cable needle on this project. It uses DK weight yarn and you can use even more of your stash making a yarn pom pom to go on top. Get the pattern on Etsy.
Try a bunch of different cable patterns — and use a lot of different yarn — with this cabled sampler afghan pattern from Esty seller Knit Sew Make. It includes five different squares, which are all 8 inches, so you can mix and match colors and patterns to make your new favorite throw.
How about a cabled sweater? The pretty Oakford cardigan from Martin Storey has simple twists and diamond cables for a pattern that’s super feminine and flattering in DK weight yarn.
If you’re looking for more of a boxy grandpa cardigan, check out the Aran cable coat jacket from Vintage Pattern Faves on Etsy. This one has all kinds of texture, a shawl collar and an extra long length worked in chunky yarn.
