There’s always room for more knit Christmas ornaments on the tree, and they make great little gifts or additions to gift bags to add some homemade goodness. Here are some fun Christmas ornament knitting patterns I’ve come across recently that you definitely can still knit a bunch of before the holiday.
I can’t get enough of ornaments that look like tiny knit garments, so let’s start there. Chatty Cathy Knitting has a great collection of little knit sweater Christmas ornaments on Etsy, which have the same basic design but lots of ideas for embellishment. They’re made with superfine yarn.
Or how about some tiny socks for your tree? Summer Lee’s Tiny Tree Socks are a free pattern on Ravelry and a great way to use all your little leftovers from your sock knitting projects through the year.
There are also great mini mitten patterns. Jared Flood has a sweet little cabled mitt you can work in any gauge yarn (get the pattern on Ravelry), or grab a free pattern for a simple mitten with embroidered embellishments from Yarnspirations.
Knit balls are a classic for Christmas tree ornaments, and you can embellish them a ton of different ways, including surface embroidery, stripes, little bits of colorwork, etc. Learn how to make a simple ball ornament from Pattern Duchess and let your imagination (and your stash of sock yarn) inspire you.
Speaking of balls, if you want the embellishment without having to figure it out on your own, grab this pattern on Etsy from Bizzy Bee Patterns. It includes a robin, Santa, reindeer, Christmas pudding and snowman (with a little hat!), all of which are worked with DK weight yarn.
How about little animals wearing little scarves? The amigurumi animal collection would be cute as ornaments or just holiday/winter decorations placed around the house. The pattern includes a bear, mouse, fox, bunny and reindeer, and uses worsted weight yarn. You can get the pattern from Amy Gaines on Etsy.
This last one claims to be a scrubber but when I saw it while scrolling I was sure it was a Christmas ornament, so I wanted to share it anyway. The Spiral Tawashi pattern is a free Ravelry download from Seven Chen and uses two colors of worsted weight yarn. Use it as a scrubber, an ornament or both. No judgement here.
