Fun Halloween Knitting Patterns

October 1, 2015 by Sarah White

Check out these great ideas for Halloween knitting patterns.Halloween knitting patterns are starting to pop of everywhere, and if you want to knit a bit of holiday decor or a piece of a costume now is the time to get going if you haven’t already.

Last year I did a great round up of pumpkin knitting patterns, and I really think I might need to knit some this year. My crafty compadre Stephanie also has a great idea on her blog for no-knit yarn pumpkins that are adorable and take about 10 seconds to make.

Speaking of pumpkins, Knit Picks has a super cute pumpkin washcloth pattern I would love to use to wash up this time of year.

Red Heart has a great ebook full of 25 knit and crochet projects for Halloween decor and more. Quite a lot of it is crochet, but the patterns are easy enough you might be able to convert them to a similar design in knitting. And I love the little scrubby ghost! This one’s not in the ebook but I love the candy corn baby cocoon, too.

The Hagar and Helga knit Viking helmets from Yarnspirations are adorable as well. The Purl Bee’s Candy Corn pattern is so cute, and I don’t even like candy corn.

The little black owl from Kat at Just Crafty Enough is super cute and pretty darn fast and easy, too. Or try a tiny Halloween Witch from Mrs. Weasel. So darn cute and a great odd ball project, too!

This one’s a classic I’ve probably shared before but I love Megan Reardon’s Hallowig from a long-ago Knitty. It’s fabulous. Someday I will knit one. Another classic is the Witchy Hands from Lion Brand Yarn. (They have lots of other great Halloween projects, too, but the knit and crochet are a little mixed in.)

And of course there are my Halloween knitting patterns over at About.

All of that should give you a good start. Are you knitting anything special for Halloween? I’d love to hear about it!

This is a wonderful book. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Have you read?

Knit a Hat with a Flock of Chickens

It’s well known (among knitters, anyway) that knitters seem to love chickens as a motif and a subject of our knitting projects. The Emotional Support Chicken and all the other chicken knitting patterns are just the beginning of our devotion to farmyard friends.

For example, there’s Farmer Dennis’ Chicken Hat. This free pattern from Stacy Black is a simple worsted weight beanie sized for adults and decorate with a couple of little rounds of colorwork fences and a flock of chickens strutting around the body of the hat.

You don’t need a lot of any of the colors for the chickens, their facial features or the fences, so this is a great project for using little leftover bits from other projects. The main color for the body of the hat is less than a skein using the yarn suggested, so you might just have everything you need in your house to start stitching up this hat right away.

The colorwork is presented as a chart, with a 16 stitch section that repeats around the body of the hat. All the color changes are shown on the chart but I think it would be easier to knit the whole chicken in the chicken color and add the eye, beak and other features using duplicate stitch when the knitting is done. That way you don’t have to carry those yarns around the whole hat for just a few stitches.

As the name suggests, the original hat was given to a farmer who shared their eggs, but anyone who raises chickens or just has a thing for the fowl is sure to love this cute hat. It wouldn’t be too difficult for someone new to stranded knitting or reading charts to make, either, so if that’s you, give it a try.

The pattern is available for free on Ravelry.
