Fun Hats and Beanies to Knit for Fall

October 3, 2023 by Sarah White

Pumpkins are everywhere this time of year, and it’s a great time to knit a pumpkin-themed hat or something else with great fall vibes. This post is almost all pumpkins, but I also have a great knit witch hat pattern I didn’t know what to do with but definitely wanted to share, so you’re getting that one here, too.

Speaking of, let’s just start with that one. The Thicc Witch Hat by Sun Daughter Knits is gorgeous and I want to knit it even though I’m not personally a witch and don’t intend to dress up for Halloween. I feel like I could just wear this any time, right? It uses super bulky yarn and comes in three sizes to fit witches small and fully grown.

If you want a hat that looks like a pumpkin, or better yet, a hat that looks like a pumpkin that you can knit for the whole family (take a moment to imagine the photos from the pumpkin patch!), check out the Pumpkin Patch Hat from Fox and Pine Stitches. This cutie is simple to knit in worsted weight yarn and it’s sized from babies to adult men. The little green stem on top just adds to the cuteness.

A different take on the pumpkin hat, this time sized for babies up to kids around age 10, comes from Marianna’s Lazy Daisy Days. This hat is worked mostly in stockinette stitch with purls to make the ridges in the pumpkin, and it uses a little I-cord tied in a knot to finish up the top.

Or maybe you want a hat with pumpkins on it instead of one that looks like a pumpkin? I have a couple of options for you there, too. The Fall Festival Beanie is a free pattern from Premier Yarns and it includes colorwork pumpkins and acorns. It’s worked in bulky yarn and was designed by Lindsey Faciane.

The Pumpkin Magic Beanie by My Comforting Crafts has pumpkins all the way down and uses two colors of worsted weight yarn. It’s sized from babies to adults, but even the adult one is super quick to knit because watching those pumpkins appear is so fun you won’t want to stop knitting. You can get this pattern on Etsy.

Learn a Flower Bobble Technique to Knit a Fun Shawl

Generally I like knitting patterns where I feel like you can use whatever yarn you have (because my stash is big enough and I want to use it, thanks) and make a successful project. This is one of those times when a special yarn makes the process that much easier.

The Floral Bouquet Shawl from Xandy Peters uses a specific extended color pooling yarn from Feisty Fibers, which allows you to place the bobble flowers with increasing frequency as you knit the project.

It starts with a solid color yarn, then the two color yarn is added in, and you make a bobble whenever you encounter the color pops. This would be hard to replicate with other yarn that doesn’t have the extended color pooling built in.

The background of the shawl is ribbed, making the project reversible.

The shawl uses fingering/sock yarn and comes out to be an asymmetrical triangle that’s 54 inches/137 cm long and 36 inches/ 90 cm deep and 60 inches/150 cm across the top edge.

Xandy says the pattern is for intermediate to advanced knitters. Knowing how to work traditional bobbles would probably help, but there’s a great video tutorial for how to work the floral bobbles so you can practice on other yarn or even incorporate the bobbles into other projects.

The bobbles are five-petaled flowers but they also kind of look like starfish to me, which could be fun on a child’s cardigan or other pattern. They’d also be fun on the leg of a sock or around the brim of a hat for extra whimsy.

The pattern includes photo and video tutorials, and written and charted instructions. It also includes tips on what to look for if you choose to use different yarn for the project, and instructions on how to dye your own yarn to use in the project.

If you want to give it a try, you can find the pattern on Ravelry.
