    A giveaway? So cool!
This summer I’ll be rockin’ socks on DPN’s and crocheting a couple market bags. I need things for the family White Elephant Christmas gift exchange, so working with light weight fibers and cotton really speaks to me as the temps climb.
    Happy Summer!

I’m currently knitting a short-sleeve sweater for myself, but it’s almost finished. After that, I’ll be starting holiday knitting…and I would love to make a table runner for my brother and sister in law.

Looks like a wonderful prize. I’m mentally making my “to-do” list for the upcoming craziness that is holiday knitting!

I plan to knit up a tank top in a nice lightweight yarn, and also make a few of the smaller accessories (like hats and gloves) that I always kick myself for not having made already on the days in January when it gets cold.

I am not knitting anything this summer instead I am taking the summer to work on my crocheting. Although I do both… I usually chose to knit because I am so much better at it than I am at crocheting. So I chose a really easy blanket pattern and decided I was going to go for it! It is made of really small squares so wish me luck. I think I may add it to my holiday knitting. It is a larger project than I usually do for gift giving… but someone on my list will be very lucky!

I’m working on a cushion cover and sleeveless, hoodless hoodie. It won’t have sleeves, ‘cuz it wasn’t upposed to, it won’t have a hood ‘cuz I’m running out of yarn.

I am trying to knit a sweater from the Sirdar book that is #137 in Baby Bamboo. I have been attempting this a few times and well each time I end up frogging it. I like the sweater and the pattern, I just have to concentrate more for this one.

Ahhhh….finally summer! I’m working on a summer cami top for myself and also a felted handbag. I’m tearing strips from an old sheet now, too, for a knitted bathroom rug. Also planning to knit the plastic grocery bag “re-bag.” I’ll also keep smaller projects on my needles to work on while taking fun summer road trips.

My summers here are so terrifically hot that even the cotton yarns & sleeveless patterns are out of the question. The winter’s cold temps that I look forward to are always an inspiration for me.

Knit a Spiky Balaclava

Not too long ago my daughter and I had a discussion about what a chestnut really looks like. The nut itself is small and brown, of course, but on the tree they’re covered with this weird kind of spiky, kind of fuzzy shell. It’s a wonder anyone ever figured out they were edible.

If you didn’t know that, you might wonder why this project is call Chestnut balaclava, but now you know.

This fun design from Yevheniia Pyroh is covered with spikes just like a chestnut shell, and is even the same color, though of course you can make yours whatever color you like. It uses two strands of fingering weight yarn held together (which it says is fingering weight but you could try a light/DK yarn and see if you get gauge with it if you’d rather).

There are two different design options in the pattern. One is a more fitted balaclava style hat (it doesn’t cover the face but does go around the neck) and a looser fit hood.

It’s worked primarily in garter stitch, with shaping done by knitting and purling in the same stitch and through various decreases (including a knit 3 together).

The pattern is charted but also explained in words. It’s worked flat to the size you want, and then joined into a hood shape with ribbing at the neck. The opening for the face is finished with I-cord.

This hood/balaclava would definitely be a conversation starter and in different colors it might read more dinosaur than chestnut, which could also be fun. The sizing is totally custom so you can make it fit whatever head you’re stitching for.

If you want to try it for yourself (and I’d love to hear about it if you do!) you can download the free pattern from Ravelry.
