I am a little obsessed with knitting stitch dictionaries. They’re so fun to look through and play with, wondering what kind of pattern you might make with that stitch, and sometimes actually doing it.

This week’s giveaway is a new collection, Knit Stitch Dictionary by Debbie Tomkies. It includes 250 stitches using basic knit and purl, twisted and traveling stitches, eyelets and lace, bobbles, tucks, pleats, wrapped and dropped stitches, slip stitches, chevrons, colorwork, cables and more. Each pattern is shown in a large swatch with both written and charted instructions, so it’s a great book for learning chart reading, too, if that’s a skill you need help with.

It’s a great book with a variety of options that isn’t too overwhelming, and a fun way to practice different techniques on a small scale of jazz up basic knitting projects.

  13. Thank you for this opportunity!! I recently changed to knitting from crochet because I started getting stiff and achy fingers while crocheting, so I am trying to learn new knitting stitches. I don’t have a favorite yet, but really want to learn the cable stitch. A reference like this would be wonderful—one-stop shopping while I’m learning new stitches.

  16. I love the Eiffel Tower stitch. When I was first starting out, I saw it in British stitch dictionary. I made a mess of it then and of course now, I haven’t a clue what book it was in. Searching is half the fun.

  23. Just finished an eye of partridge heel flap and love the texture it creates. I’ve only ever seen this texture used for heels, but I think it might make fantastic fingerless mitts.

  24. Knitting stitch pattern books are my favorite. Right now I’m only making rectangles and squares with knit and purl stitches. I felt bold when I did one with a skip stitch. My current one is a chevron pattern that looked was, but it turns out it isn’t error forgiving. Oh well. I’m still having fun with it. That’s for this giveaway. Right up my knitting alley.

  27. Well as if said before I love stitch collections it’s a great way to discover techniques I’ve never tried or even heard of. I love using them for sampler afghans and baby blankets

  28. My favourite stitch pattern is “Feather and Fan”. I use to stitch patterns to replace plain stockinette stitch in baby jackets and socks!

  29. I’ve got a cable stitch pattern book, and have been looking to get a regular stitch book- a couple of months ago I made up some cable swatches and framed them and think I would like to make some of other stitches, too.

    Maybe this dictionary would help me to overcome that attitude.

Christmas Sock Knitting Patterns

Why should the fireplace get all the fun? Instead of knitting stockings this year, why not whip up a pair of Christmas themed socks? These Christmas sock knitting patterns are lots of fun to make and you can wear them to holiday gatherings for years to come.

For our friends in the southern part of the world, there are the Christmas in July socks from the Kiwi Lodge – Kylie (Ravelry link). These shorty socks are covered in Christmas trees and have bright pink heels and toes for a tropical feel. There’s also an option to make a longer sock if you celebrate somewhere it’s colder.

Twin Stitches Designs (Ravelry) has a fun pattern with mix and match colorwork motifs you can use to build your own cozy Christmas socks. From the sample socks I see Christmas puddings, trucks hauling trees, Santa belts, ornaments and a couple of different borders. There may be more patterns included but the listing doesn’t say. Make a pair that matches or use different motifs on each foot for extra holiday cheer.

If you want to stick to Christmas puddings on your holiday socks, check out this cute pattern from Stone Knits. These lovely socks feature a band of puddings around the leg and a bit of holly by the toes.

These vintage holiday light socks from Grey Owl Knits by Sarah are classic looking and lots of fun at the same time. I love this color combination but of course you can make your lights and stripes whatever colors you like or have on hand. They’re worked using stranded knitting.

And if you’d like even more of a mix of patterns for your socks, try Barbara Ceglédi’s Christmas Chaos socks, a free pattern on Ravelry. The pattern includes 25 little motifs you can choose from, ranging from snowflakes and Christmas trees to elf hats, reindeer and hearts.
