Giveaway: Sock Knitting Books

March 16, 2015 by Sarah White

sock knitting book giveawaySince I’m still thinking about sock knitting this week, I thought it would be fun to give away a couple of sock knitting books.

First is the booklet I reviewed for you last week, Easy Knitted Socks. I’m also going to throw in a copy of Knitted Socks by Anna Tillman, but you’re going to have to wait until tomorrow for a full review on that one. For now let’s just say it has some really creative, colorful and wild projects your whole family will enjoy (she had me at rainbow-colored toe socks, to be honest).

If you want a chance to win these books, leave a comment on this post by the end of the day Sunday, March 22. I’d love to know what experience you have if any with knitting socks, and if you haven’t knit socks yet, why not? (If you need some reasons, check out my great list.)

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing. Good luck!

I’ve knitted four pairs of socks now and I love it! Just started doing two-at-a-time socks on a fifth pair and WOW! Why haven’t I been doing that in the first place? Hope you enjoy making socks, too!

I haven’t knitted socks yet. I did take a class to learn and it is on my list to make some. I just have to finish making my husband’s sweater (my first) and my cabled cape (another first).

I love knitting socks and would love to win the books. I do need to learn some of the newer techniques as I still fall back on my double pointed needles. Learned that way many years ago and still do it that way.

I’m just getting in to knitting socks. I started with tube socks because the thought of knitting a heel was just too scary for me. I have now graduated to an afterthought heel and it’s so easy. Combine that with magic loop and I’m addicted to socks now.

Every once in a while I realize I’ve knit more socks than I thought I have. For the most part I steer away from sock knitting because I think they will take me forever, and I just don’t have the time. I do love the ones that I have managed to knit tho!

I love knitting socks. One of these days, I will get up the courage to knit Argyll socks like my mother did. I remember her sitting in her chair with bobbins hanging off the sock she was working on.

I have knitted one pair of socks – or, rather, 1/2 of a pair of socks, when my children were little (a very long time ago!!). But with circular needles and magic loops and magic circles I’m becoming interested in trying again. Maybe an actual full pair!! 🙂

I started knitting socks for my kids when they were little, and now they are in college so I’ve been doing it for a few years! I’ve gotten to where I try to learn something new with each pair, for example the pair I’m doing right now I am knitting from the toe up, a first for me.

These books look great. I’m always keeping any eye out for more sock patterns. 🙂

I love working with sock-weight yarn, so I’ve knit many pairs of socks over the years.

I am currently knitting a pair of baby socks as a gift for a friend who is due in August. They’ll have a hat to accompany them, but I haven’t started it yet.

I also completed 3 pairs of socks for my husband over this winter. I was trying to come up with a standard sock pattern for him so I could just grab a skein of yarn and go.

Make Your Knitting Machine Scarves Better

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve shared any patterns for our circular knitting machine users. I know these devices aren’t for everyone but even though I much prefer knitting by hand, it is kind of fun to crank things out on these machines.

One of the most common early projects for a circular knitting machine is a scarf. Which makes sense, because it’s just one long tube and you can make it as long as you like.

One problem that comes from knitting scarves on the circular knitting machine, though, is that it can be hard to know how to finish the ends of the tube so that it looks like a finished scarf and not a tube of knitting.

If you’re not a knitter or crocheter, the most basic way to finish a circular knitting machine scarf is just by cinching up the ends and maybe adding a pompom to each end to cover up any hole that might still be visible at the end.

But if you have a little knitting or crochet skill or are willing to learn, there are a lot of different options for closing up the ends of a scarf. And this would also be true if you hand knit a tube scarf!

I recently wrote a post over at Our Daily Craft that includes five different ways to close up the ends of a tube scarf:

  • the simple cinching method mentioned above
  • sewing the stitches together
  • three needle bind off
  • grafting
  • crochet bind off

Grafting is my favorite because I feel like it gives the cleanest, closest to a seamless look. If you’re a knitter you may already know how to do it but even if you don’t it’s not that hard to learn.

Do you knit tube scarves by hand or machine? I’d love to know how you like to finish them!
