Giveaway: Summer Knitting Book and Yarn

July 8, 2012 by Sarah White

knitting in the sunI know it’s hard for a lot of people to want to knit when it’s hot outside. I have air conditioning and it’s still a struggle just knowing that it’s 100 degrees outside (though we finally got rain yesterday and it’s supposed to be cooler — 80s and 90s — for the next few days!).

Blogger Lime Riot is the same way, and she’s trying to motivate herself to do more summer knitting by hosting a summer knitting giveaway.

All you have to do is comment on her blog about how you’re incorporating crafting into your summer. Up for grabs are a copy of Kristi Porter’s Knitting in the Sun (that link is to my review on About) and two balls of Jo Sharp Soho Summer, a lovely, light cotton yarn. The contest is open through Saturday, June 21.

I’d love to hear how (or if) you’re crafting in the heat, too. Spill it!

I sit in the shade on a little patio off my bedroom & knit – mostly hats. Seems all I want to do lately is knit. I resent having to do any housework because it takes me away from my knitting.

So far I have sat on my front porch and crocheted a wrap and slippers while watching the smoke of a 1200 arce fire which started 1/2 a mile away. It was a way to use nervous energy and keep an eye on the ball.

I sit on the couch in front of a box fan (no AC) and knit/crochet scarves, socks, hats, and whatever doesn’t cover my lap.

I knit dish cloths by the dozen, work on smaller christmas presents (fingerless gloves, scarves), and gather the materials for cozy winter knitting.

I knit regardless of the weather, but I am grateful for my AC. I’m mostly making smaller projects like pillows and afghan squares.

Knit a Blanket with the Texture of a Ceiling

Knitwear designers can get inspiration from almost anything when it comes to re-creating a color scheme, an image or a texture in stitches. Sometimes the inspiration isn’t always obvious in the finished project, but sometimes it’s more literal.

That’s the way it is with the Tin Ceiling Blanket from Purl Soho. Not just because the inspiration is in the name, but if you’ve ever seen one of these old ceilings you can see that the design of the blanket is quite similar to the pattern of the tin tiles.

This is also a good example of the idea that you don’t have to use fancy stitch patterns or lots of color to make a big impact with your knits. This single-color blanket (designed by Gianna Mueller and inspired by a washcloth and towel set designed by Sandi Rosner) is made completely with knits and purls, other than slipped stitches at the beginning of rows to make neater edges.

The pattern is written out row by row, but there’s also a chart, which means this project is a great opportunity to practice reading a chart where you can check your work against the written pattern if you need to.

It comes in two sizes, a crib blanket and a throw. The yarn used in the sample is an organic cotton sold by the cone, which is a great way to get a large quantity of yarn and have fewer ends to weave in. In fact, you can knit either size of the blanket with just one cone of yarn, which isn’t inexpensive but makes you a great, sturdy, heirloom quality but still washable blanket you’ll use for years to come. (Of course you can use any sport weight yarn you like to make this blanket.)

Check out all the details and grab the free pattern from Purl Soho.
