Honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Knitting

September 22, 2020 by Sarah White

The passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week has been emotional for a lot of people, and has increased the popularity of RBG inspired knitting projects.

In case you want to bring a little of her style and dissent to your knitting wardrobe, I thought I’d collect some options for you.

You can also check out these designs on Etsy

Carissa Browning’s Dissent Cowl is available in knit and crochet versions and on Ravlery and LoveCrafts. She’s donating 100 percent of pattern sales until Election Day to the ACLU, which has already come to more than $20,000. It costs $5 and is worked in two colors of DK weight yarn.

Looking for more knitting patterns for knitted Cardigans? Check out these Knitting patterns we found on Etsy.

Knitorious RBG by Park Williams is a fun sweater inspired by an RBG collar with fun puffy sleeves. It uses worsted weight yarn, is available in eight sizes and you can get it on Ravelry for $9.

Then there is Andrea Rangel’s Dissent Sweater, available from Ravelry in a fingering weight pullover and worsted weight cardigan option. Both are $10 and come in 11 sizes.

You can add a dissent collar to any sweater pattern with this chart (also on Ravelry) from Colleen Humphreys. It’s perfect for a circular yoke sweater or cardigan.

If you’d rather knit just the collar, try the “I Dissent” Collar from Camille K. Lewis, which uses crochet thread and uses four different sizes of knitting needles. You can find it on Ravelry for $2.

You can knit a tiny judge robe with beaded “collar” with this pattern from By Tale or History Knitting Designs. It suits an 18-inch doll and is available on Ravelry for $5. The pattern also includes a two-piece suit, shoes and stockings, and you can make a regular lac collar, too.

Make RBG in mitten form with this design from Lotta Lundin. They feature Ruth with and without her notorious crown along with “I Dissent” on one mitten and “Fight for the things you care about” on the other. The pattern is on Ravelry and runs kr.75.00 SEK, or about $8.94.

Max Pfeifer designed a hat with a collar motif in his Dissent pattern, which is available in one size and can be downloaded from Ravlery for $5.

Know any other RBG inspired knitting patterns? I’d love to hear about them!

Thirty carefully researched and beautifully illustrated pages highlight the important milestones in Ginsburg’s remarkable life, from her time as a law professor and her years on the U.S. Court of Appeals to her career as the 107th Supreme Court Justice.

A Blanket Knitting Pattern Where Yarn Selection is Everything

Many times when I write these posts I will say something like “you can use any yarn you want” or “this would be a great stash-busting project.” That’s just how my mind works. And my stash, too, since I probably have sweater quantity of two or three yarns at most, but tons of singles and odd balls and leftovers.

Blankets are generally a really good way to use up those bits, but in this case, I think you’re going to want to plan it out a bit better.

Looking at photos of the Color Study Blanket from Purl Soho, it looks like it’s made with two yarns held together, and that block in the center is worked with one of each color from the adjoining sides to make a mixed up color.

But that’s not actually how it’s done. This is three separate colors (four, really, with the neutrals in the corners) chosen form a yarn with an expansive palette so they play off each other. The project calls for a worsted weight superwash wool, which is a great choice for a blanket that’s both warm and washable.

This pattern was originally designed by Laura Ferguson and was updated by Hiromi Glover. It is worked in one piece in garter stitch intarsia, which is a great way to learn the intarsia technique if you don’t already know it. It comes in crib or throw sizes.

Despite the introduction to this post, I am going to go ahead and say that, yes, of course you could do this blanket with scraps or odd balls or even just choose five colors that don’t blend together so easily. But I really do love the look of the color play, and I think it would be worth your time to find colors that play well together to get a similar effect.

This pattern is available for free from Purl Soho.
