Jack O’Lantern Halloween Knitting Patterns

August 20, 2021 by Sarah White

Fall might not quite be in the air just yet, but crafty people are definitely starting to get into the fall vibes. I’m longing to knit a big snuggly sweater (and some more pumpkins!) and I’ve been on the lookout for cute knitting patterns featuring jack o’lanterns. Here’s a few things I found.

The Bernat “Very Scary” Pullover features a jack o’lantern face on the front and is sized for kids 2-8 years. This is a free pattern on the Yarnspirations website.

This little Halloween hat from Wiam’s Crafts offers options with jack o’lanterns and ghosts. The top of the hat looks like a spiderweb, too. This free pattern is sized for toddlers and bigger kids.

Rosemary Davis’ Jack-o-lantern Socks (available on Ravelry) are basically normal socks with a jack o’lantern pattern below the cuff and a cute contrasting heel and toe (which is optional, of course!).

These cute tiny treat bags from dollytime on Etsy are adorable for holding little treats for a Halloween party or if you don’t have a ton of trick-or-treaters. Options for embellishment include a pumpkin, witch, cat and owl.

Jack o’lantern dishcloths are a classic and fun project to knit that only requires knowing knits and purls. This version from Daisy and Storm is a great square to use as a washcloth or in an afghan. You can get it on Etsy.

Add Shelley Winiger’s double knit jack o’lantern pot holder and you’ll have a whole holiday ensemble for your kitchen. This one is a free download from Ravelry.

(Speaking of free downloads form Ravelry, check out my Halloween coffee cup cozy.)

If you have a little kid to knit for, these Jack O’Lantern longies are adorable and not that hard to knit. Designer Alison McCalister offers several different faces that can go on the butt of the pants so you can decide the expression on your pumpkin. Download from Ravelry.

Hi, Jennifer, as far as I know there are no patterns here directly sold by us. Which one are you having problems with?

Have you read?

Knit a Hat with a Flock of Chickens

It’s well known (among knitters, anyway) that knitters seem to love chickens as a motif and a subject of our knitting projects. The Emotional Support Chicken and all the other chicken knitting patterns are just the beginning of our devotion to farmyard friends.

For example, there’s Farmer Dennis’ Chicken Hat. This free pattern from Stacy Black is a simple worsted weight beanie sized for adults and decorate with a couple of little rounds of colorwork fences and a flock of chickens strutting around the body of the hat.

You don’t need a lot of any of the colors for the chickens, their facial features or the fences, so this is a great project for using little leftover bits from other projects. The main color for the body of the hat is less than a skein using the yarn suggested, so you might just have everything you need in your house to start stitching up this hat right away.

The colorwork is presented as a chart, with a 16 stitch section that repeats around the body of the hat. All the color changes are shown on the chart but I think it would be easier to knit the whole chicken in the chicken color and add the eye, beak and other features using duplicate stitch when the knitting is done. That way you don’t have to carry those yarns around the whole hat for just a few stitches.

As the name suggests, the original hat was given to a farmer who shared their eggs, but anyone who raises chickens or just has a thing for the fowl is sure to love this cute hat. It wouldn’t be too difficult for someone new to stranded knitting or reading charts to make, either, so if that’s you, give it a try.

The pattern is available for free on Ravelry.
