Knit a Yoked Sweater with Tons of Texture

May 8, 2023 by Sarah White

Most of the time when I see knitting patterns for circular yoke sweaters, they include a lot of colorwork on the yoke to draw attention to that part of the sweater. (I’ve even designed a colorful circular yoke sweater, which is in one of my books, and you can see the design on Ravelry.)

The Alatau Yoke pattern from Ainur Berkimbayeva is worked in one color, so it’s all about the texture showing the lines of the garment. The body is worked in twisted rib, and the gauge is relatively firm. Picking yarn with good stitch definition is vital for this one to make those ridges pop.

The design wad originally worked in a DK weight yarn but you might find a worsted weight works better for you to get gauge and be able to reproduce the fabric the way it was intended to look.

Beyond the twisted rib, you’ll also need to know how to work German short rows, the provisional cast on, various increases and decreases and working in the round.

There are six size options in the pattern, ranging from a chest measurement of 36.5 to 67 inches. The design is meant to be worn with 4 to 8 inches of positive ease. Customization notes are included in the pattern to help you pick a size. The sleeves are worked with much less ease so you can also adjust that if you want to.

Because the top is worked with a provisional cast on, you can decide later whether you want to finish the neckline as a crew neck or a turtleneck. This is great if you think you might run out of yarn because you can stitch the body and sleeves and then decide on the neckline finishing based on how much yarn you have left.

The design is offered at a pay what you can price and you can get it on Ravelry.
