I’ve never knit a pair of shorts, but that may be able the only kind of garment I’ve never made (I’ve made most of a pair of leggings, if that counts).
The Bell of the Bobble Shorts from Kate Gardin are a super cute intro to shorts knitting. They’re designed as high waisted short shorts, though of course you can alter to make the legs longer or the waist shorter or both if that’s what you’d prefer. And they have cute little bobbles at the leg edge.
They use DK weight yarn and are available in 9 sizes. You can get a copy on Ravelry.

We’re a big Studio Ghibli household, and while they are sometimes very protective of their copyrights (as evidenced by the number of patterns on Ravelry that were removed from the service when it received a takedown notice back in 2021), there are still a fair number of Totoro knitting patterns (as well as other designs I’m sure we’ll get to someday). Let’s check them out!
