There are some pretty common shawl shapes in the knitting world: rectangles, triangles, circles and half circles among them.
But there are lots of different shapes that can be used to make a shawl, including this kind of funky square-missing-a-piece design in the Outside the Chic Box Shawl from Kara Gott Warner and Red Heart.
