Never Look A Knitted Gift Horse In The Needles?

February 16, 2010 by Terrye

Or something like that! A Knitted Hobby Horse, that’s what it is!

I recently came across a copy of this book that I’d like to giveaway. Not because I don’t want it, but because it’s an awesome book (yes, it really does have a knitted hobby horse in it, as well as cat toys…).

30 projects all packed up in this book, everything from bags, baby buntings and bookmarks to socks, scarves and sleeves.

Does your coffee need a coaster because it’s hot, and a cozy to keep it that way? This book has it (as well as dishrags to wipe up that coffee that spilled). Mittens, gloves and wrist warmers, toys, blankets, hats and pillows, there’s no end to the versatility. You got a persnickity person to knit for? There’s a project in this book that will save the day.

Want to learn a new technique? This book features projects in fair isle, stranding and felting. Embroidery, cables, lace, bobbles, and then it covers finishing techniques!

Knitted Gifts offers more than 30 projects for every gift-giving occasion. Designs include garments and accessories for the entire family as well as gifts for four-legged friends and the home.

What do you have to do to get this book? Tell me what your favorite, last minute, quick to knit idea is.

Giveaway ends Friday the 19th, hurry!

And.. just for a fun little kicker, I’m going to throw in another book featuring a popular gift item, hats! Hat Heads by Trond Afinnsen.

2 for the price of one…… GO!!

Wow! Great books! My favorite quick knit is a hat. Especially for a baby gift! Thanks for the great giveaway!

Dear me, I’d jump through fire for the Hat Heads book alone!

My quick gift is: Christmas ornaments. Great for housewarmings, wedding gifts, Baby’s First, etc. And you know that the recipent will think of you every year they pull that out! I have yet to see a knit ornament being resold at a thrift store, but there are thousands of hats, scarves, baby blankets and Granny Square everything’s resold!

scarves are my go to gift and even when someone has one of mine already they seem happy to get them 🙂 baby blankets too. But seeing the previous posters answer, I may have to start thinking ornament 😉

    My last minute quick
to knit gift idea is a
    tea cup cosy along with
    the tea cup.
    Thank you.

Sounds like a great book! I love to knit owl hats as a last-minute gift. Less than 1 skein of Cascade 220 or Patons Classic Wool Merino + a free pattern!

My last minute, quick to knit gift idea is fingerless mitts. But I like the Christmas ornament idea, Liz, I’ll have to try that!

    I don’t have a quick-knit gift, because I JUST started knitting! But my quick-sew gift is Amy Smart’s 32-minute messenger bag 🙂

    Hi Junglewife,
Do you have a link for that? I’ve not heard of it.

    Thanks

Dishcloths/washcloths are the quickest to do, but my second favourite is the Felted Clogs from Fiber Trends. They take a little more time to make, but they are SO well received! I’m currently working on the second go-round on these (the gifted ones from a couple of years ago are starting to wear out!).

I love to make fingerless mitts. I would like to learn Fair Isle on a smaller project. I have issues with instant gratification.

    February 16, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I try to avoid last minute situations by keeping a few hats and scarves around, along with little items in other crafts, and some thrift shop treasures. In a pinch a scarflette or cowl in superchunky yarn on size 17 needles works up very quickly. These are two great books, thanks for the generous giveaway!

Fingerless mittens are great for last-minute gifts and can be quickly knit.

  14. Shelly says

    February 16, 2010 at 3:36 pm

    I’m a slow knitter, so I can’t do last-minute gifts. I crochet a tawashi or sew a coaster if I need a last-minute gift.

  15. Jen says

I love to make things like coffee mug holders, tea pot covers, small purses……I hope I win. Awesome giveaway!

  16. Jeanne says

    February 16, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Definitely hats… They don’t consume too much yarn and I can whip out a simpe one in one evening. I’ve also done some cute ornaments for the holidays- out of my stash of course.

Mittens. I have my Gran’s old pattern, and can whip up a pair in a weekend. The beauty of them is that for all that it’s a pretty plain pattern you can do an insane amount of things with it from making a plain pair out of a solid color wool to a wildly stripey pair our of your leftover odds and ends to (my favorite) embroidering a pattern into the backs of the hands. Living up here in the north east, I know they’re always appreciated when shoveling. 😉

I have a Bag of Tricks, where I keep small finished projects tied in a ribbon. I wrap one up, and bring the bag for instant “exchanges”. But if Im in a real bind, I go dishcloth/ kitchen towel set (mason-dixon books 1&2), or slippers (modified from Ysold Teague’s Whimsical Little Knits vol. 1).

Love the hobby horse. My quickknit gift – neck warmers. Generally only require a ball or two.

  38. crazyestonian says

    February 17, 2010 at 10:21 am

I have done more socks for gifts than anything else, but speedwise hat is faster and I have done a fair amount of those as well. But really, a basic pair of socks takes only 3 days of knitting if I still do everything else that life requires. I have done hand warmers too but people I know don’t really wear them for some reason.

Unoriginal as it is, scarves knit up quickly. My favorite pattern is the My So-Called Scarf since it is nice & warm and the pattern is dead simple. And I’ve always got enough yarn around for a scarf!

  42. Molly says

My favorite last minute, quick to knit idea is a baby blanket. But they are always bigger than I anticipate and never quick to knit!!!

    February 17, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Last minute – a vest…large, small, with cables, mitred, it doesn’t matter. They are quick, fun and portable so I can take them with me wherever I go!

  44. Regina says

    February 17, 2010 at 6:15 pm

To be honest – I am a quilter being pulled inexorably by my sister and friend into the world of knitting. I have not knit in years- and so a quick go to gift in my mind would be sewn and not knit – I am hoping with their teaching and books like these that soon will change!!

  45. Linda says

    February 17, 2010 at 6:57 pm

My favorite quick-to-knit gifts are dishcloths. I just learned to knit in October so I made everyone dishcloths for Christmas. They were so appreciated that my friends are already asking for more! I also made several scarves. I’m eager to learn some additional techniques. Thanks so much for this opportunity!

  47. Amy says

Book Review: Magical Woodland Knits

Magical Woodland Knits by Clare Garland is a few years old as I write this, but it’s such a fun book I couldn’t resist sharing it. Step into a magical forest full of realistic woodland creatures including rabbit, deer and squirrel, birds and mice, to name a few.

In all there are 12 creatures, and though they are rather small (the wolf is the largest at 14.5 inches/37 cm tall and 18.5 inches/47 cm long), they are so detailed these are definitely not projects for new knitters.

One of the smaller projects, for example, is the robin, at 5/5 inches/14 cm long. It calls for nine different kinds of yarn. Sometimes some are held together, while others are worked with on their own. This pattern only includes three pages of instructions, but the print is rather small and in that time there are six different sets of short rows. None of this makes it too difficult for a knitter with experience reading detailed patterns, working short rows and working with multiple strands of yarn at once, but it’s worth knowing going in that even for small projects you’ll need a lot of supplies and time to work on them.

These are also not meant to be children’s toys, as they can include wires and other supports that could be a danger to little ones.

The process photos often look like taxidermy on a tiny scale, with little animal pelts stretched out and tons of stitch markers showing where and how things go together.

The finished animals are so pretty it’s certainly worth the effort to stitch up these creatures. You might be tempted to make all 12 and set up your own forest scene or use them to decorate your Christmas tree. You can check out all the patterns on Ravelry.

Along the way you’ll also find a little folklore about the animals, charming drawings and pretty photos of the finished animals, too. In the back you’ll find some helpful techniques like picking up stitches, making I-cord and working short rows.

About the book: 128 pages, paperback, 12 patterns. Published 2020 by David & Charles. Suggested retail price $24.99.
