In celebration of the 100th birthday of the Broadway Bridge in Portland, Ore., some 150 volunteers knit up four giant blankets that are now decorating the bridge in vivid colors.
The installation was put up just in time for the bridge festival, which is Aug. 10. The bridge, which spans the Willamette River, opened in 1913 and was at the time the longest bascule bridge in the world, and the first in Portland. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places last year.
When the festival is finished, the blankets will be removed, separated, cleaned and donated to local warming stations to help people in need this winter.
