Stranded knitting can be a little intimidating to knitters who haven’t tried it before, but I promise it is really simple. You just work a stitch or several in one color, then one or several in another, leaving the other yarn to float somewhat loosely across the back of the work.
Exactly how loose or how tight those strands need to be is the primary problem knitters might have with stranded knitting, but this pattern makes it a little easier because the color you’re using changes after every stitch.
The hat — known as the Yukon Beanie by Underground Crafter– is also worked in ribbing, so the result is a two-color rib that makes vertical stripes up the hat.
It’s actually really easy but it doesn’t look it, and it makes a hat that’s really wearable (and warm) for men and women alike.

I’ve been writing about knitting online for a long time, and a lot of things have changed. But one good thing I think has changed over the years is that fewer people see knitting as a seasonal activity. Most people don’t seem to think anymore that there’s a time when it’s too hot to knit or too hot to wear knits.
