Super Bulky Mitten Knitting Patterns

December 9, 2024 by Sarah White

Need a quick knit gift or just a way to keep your hands warm in a hurry? Super bulky knit mittens are the way to go. Super bulky yarn knits up fast and mittens keep you warmer than gloves because all your fingers are together.

Super bulky knit mitten patterns run the gamut from super simple designs perfect for beginners to more detailed patterns. Let’s take a look at some.

On the easier end of the spectrum, try the Classic Knit Mittens from Weird Sheep. They are worked in the round on double pointed needles. You can work them in a single color as shown or use yarn left over from other projects. They only take about 85 yards and are sized for babies and adults.

Yankee Knitter Designs has another cute super bulky mitten knitting pattern that uses contrasting yarn on the cuff and the top of the mitten (though of course you can make them solid or striped instead if you want). This pattern has three sizes for children as well as women and men’s sizes, and it includes instructions for working on DPNs, magic loop or on straight needles.

Use all your chunky scraps on the Zero to Hero mittens from Brenda Made This. The pattern is mostly stockinette stitch with a purl ridge on the right side each time you change colors to add some texture.

Add some twisted stitches to your mittens with the North Shore Mitts by Kim Bussell on Ravelry. This pattern comes in three sizes for adults. If you like the technique of the stitch pattern, there’s a coordinating beanie, headband, and coffee coozie as well.

Or throw in a super simple cable like on these mittens from KNITERATURES. This pattern comes in a single size for adults and  it would be a great first cable knitting project.

How about some colorwork? Karolina Adamczyk’s Five Times Warmer pattern on Ravelry includes five different colorwork patterns to use on your mitts. From snowflakes to hearts and diamonds there are lots of good options for simple colorwork that will keep you even warmer than regular bulky mittens.

Get into the Details with the Sashiko Tee Knitting Pattern

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that uses running stitches to make lines (straight or otherwise) that reinforce and insulate fabric. It can be used as a mending technique or for decorative purposes, and it has become popular in recent years as a visible mending technique.

It’s also the inspiration behind the Sashiko Tee by Elenor Mortensen. This top down, circular yoke top is worked in the round with allover stranded knitting designs reminiscent of intricate sashiko stitching.

You’ll find floral patterns, starbursts, straight lines and individual colorwork stitches in this design.

The pattern is offered in six sizes and two different gauges (both use fingering weight yarn) making a dozen different size options. The finished bust circumference of the sweater ranges from 33.8 to 57 inches, or 86 to 145 cm.

The project calls for two colors, and I love the traditional blue and white of the designer’s sample, but some of the projects shown on Ravelry use more than two or use a multicolored yarn as one of the options, which gives it a different look that’s even more interesting. There are also some projects that show longer sleeves, repeating the patterns from the body on the sleeves, which is a great move if you need a sweater for the fall.

I know I say this a lot but it’s worth your time to look at the different ways people have approached this sweater by clicking on the projects tab on Ravelry. You’ll find different colors and sleeves, different ribbing treatments, added beads, a bit of mohair, different lengths, subtle colors and bolder choices…so many fun options.

The pattern is available in English, French and German, and you can grab a copy of Ravelry. I think this one would be a fun way to get into colorwork knitting without having to deal with a bunch of colors, and you get a cool result and lots of practice following a chart.
