In a bit of breaking crafty news, the Pantone Institute has just announced that the Color of the Year for 2015 is Marsala, a kind of reddish brown, like the wine, or the color of a red fox, or maybe a pomegranate seed.
I bring up all those images because they’re all shown in the report on this color, which is described as “naturally robust and earthy,” “subtly seductive,” “tasteful” and “plush.”
The color pros at Pantone say it’s great for accessories, and that it is an “elegant, grounded statement color when used on its own or as a strong accent to many other colors.”
No doubt knitters will be looking for this color soon, but I did a quick search on Ravelry in an attempt to find some projects in this color to inspire your future knitting endeavors. It’s a little difficult to tell on screen (or searching just for a color on Ravelry) if these would all really fall under the marsala category, but they’re pretty and earthy and wine like, so I think they do.
The Red Wine Beret by Brian Smith has a pretty lace brim and uses twisted stitches on the body to add a little more fun to the knitting.
Oxblood is a lovely variation on the Sunny Side Up Sweater designed by Isabell Kraemer (this version was knit by Ravelry user gUTEs). It features a pretty diamond lace panel down the front.
Boo Humbug by Boo Knits is one that may stray into more of a merlot kind of color, but it is a lovely beaded lace stole knit in this color by knittingfiona.
Buffoo’s Please Wear Red Tonight, a variation on Vanessa Smith’s Sarai, is a lovely lace shawl worked in wedges on the back for easy wearing.
Same Song’s Merlot version of Whisper by Kim Hargreaves is a beauty; it’s a mohair sweater with a peplum that’s really pretty.
“Killing” acrylic yarn doesn’t normally sound like something you would want to do, but it makes for great drape in user abbysitznmomanitz’s I Just Killed Acrylic version of the Easy Lace Stole.
The Aeolian Wine Shawl by Haramis17 uses Elizabeth Freeman’s gorgeous lace triangular shawl.
It’s a little hard to tell, but FaithAnne’s Button Me up Pullover (originally by Lauren Chau) looks like its marsalaish. It’s pretty in any case.
The Wine Berry Triangle Shawl by RoxanneXYG is another beauty (designed by Michelle Miller).
The Six Zero Shawl by elsteffo (from a pattern by Margaret Stove) is breathtaking.
For sheer simplicity of showing off a great color, elenamar’s Cashmere Bias Loop 4 (from a Churchmouse Yarns and Teas pattern) is a wonderful choice.
Or try the Star Magnolia shawl from Fiber Dreams, a challenging crescent shaped with short rows featuring lace and a cable border.
See anything you like? What do you think of this color? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I think this color is extremely wearable. I predict many garments will be made out of Marsalis yarns and for the ladies. .. matching lipstick will be essential. 😉
