I haven’t knit a lot of short socks but I have a great affection for the ones that I do have. It’s sometimes nice, especially when just hanging out at home, to have socks that just cover the feet and not much else.
They are great for when you are learning to knit socks because all the techniques are compressed, and they knit up so much faster than a sock with 7 inches of leg.
The River Rocks Socks from Niree Noel and a great pair to start with if you’re new to knitting socks in general or shorty socks in particular.
They use Seed Stitch, so the effect when walking on them almost gives you a foot massage (or knit the bottom plain if you’d rather). A bit of mohair adds fuzzy softness and even more texture.
The pattern offers two sizes and is a free Ravelry download.
