I know it’s a bit of a cliche to say that all dads wear ties, but I do think a knit tie is a nice thing to have when you do need to wear one, so let’s look at some tie knitting patterns that absolutely do not have to be just for dads or just for Father’s Day.
The Necktie Recipe from yamagara (available on Ravelry) is meant to be worked at any gauge with any yarn you like, and any width or length you like. It uses seed stitch so the tie could be reversible and the edges won’t curl. Make a tie like you’d wear with a button up shirt, or use it as a headband or belt.
Meridian Made has a basic flat end tie pattern made with sock yarn. The pattern notes say it has three design options — one is garter stitch and I think one is ribbing but it’s not clear from the photos what the other option is. Regardless, this is a nice, easy pattern you can make with a favorite ball of yarn or to use up sock yarn leftovers.
Karolina Wesolek has a stylish and slightly edgy tie with the We will knot you tie pattern. I think it’s a brioche pattern, worked in light fingering weight yarn. The pattern is charted and you can find it on Ravelry.
The Perfect Gentleman tie by Bespoke Knits by Cinzia is made with DK weight yarn and includes some design elements that help it lie flat including being worked as a tube. It also uses a provisional cast on and a three-needle bind off.
The Oxford Tie from Whistle and Wool also uses seed stitch for a simple, classic men’s tie. The pattern notes don’t say what weight of yarn is used but it looks relatively heavy.
The Okehampton tie from Wyndlestraw Designs has a fun stitch pattern that includes little textured triangles. It’s easy to knit and calls for a DK weight yarn.
