I’m all for plain stocking caps and beanies because they are fast to knit and unendingly useful, but sometimes it’s fun to add in a little detail to make the knitting and the wearing that much more fun.
The I’m Lichen it Hat from Balls to the Walls Knits is a fine example. It’s a mostly Stockinette hat worked in the round, but it includes a little braided cable on the back and a little Kitchener Stitch finishing that helps to make the hat naturally slouchy and ruchey. Is that a word?
Anyway, it’s still an easy and quick knitting pattern because it’s worked in bulky yarn, and I love the natural look of the yarn she chose, though of course whatever is lingering in your stash is the perfect choice for this projec.
