Last winter there was kind of a fad related to messy bun hats or ponytail hats. These are like regular hats, but you don’t decrease such that you can close up the top of the hat. Instead, you finish it with a hole at the top so your hair can stick out.
I came across this pretty take on the messy bun hat called Slope Side by Cheryl Beckerich, and I was really taken with the cabled pattern. It’s rated for intermediate knitters and uses a pretty small quantity of bulky yarn. I’ll bet you’ve got something perfect in your stash.
This one comes pretty close to a fully closed-off hat, so you could just continue to decrease and finish off the top as normal if you don’t want or need a messy bun hat.
Even better: this pattern is free on Ravelry through the end of January, 2018. You know you could use a new hat for the rest of the cold season, am I right?
