Bring a Little Brightness to Your Knitting

April 3, 2023 by Sarah White

It’s said that April showers bring May flowers, but what if we need some color right now? At least we can knit with bright colors any time of year, and the Let the Good Times Roll Sweater by Sylvia Watts-Cherry helps us do just that.

This colorful sweater has striped sleeves and a roller skate motif worked in intarisa on the front of the sweater. There are stars on the back, so the knitting is interesting throughout on this one.

Of course you don’t have to stitch it up in neon colors, but why wouldn’t you? It just adds to the retro vibe.

The sweater is worked flat from the bottom up, has modified drop sleeves and a crew neck. It’s available in nine sizes, with chest measurements ranging from 35.75 to 69 inches. The sweater is meant to be worn with about 5.5 to 7 inches of positive ease, so keep that in mind when picking a size.

If this neon extravaganza isn’t enough for your 1980s-loving heart, then you might also want to check out Sylvia’s coordinating legwarmers. Worked in similar stripes to the sleeves of the sweater but you could also use different colors if you wanted.

The leg warmer can be worn slouchy or pulled up to keep the legs warm over leggings. They are offered in five sizes, ranging from 10 to 17 inches in calf circumference. They’re worked in three colors in the round from the bottom up and there is no shaping involved, making them a great project for people who are new to working in the round.

Whether you want to knit the sweater or the legwarmers or both, the patterns are available on Ravelry: Let the Good Times Roll sweater and legwarmers. They’re the perfect way to brighten up a gloomy day and sharpen your knitting skills at the same time!
