There are so many great, colorful sock yarns out there that it’s super tempting to use them for other projects that call for fingering-weight yarns.
I found this article from Jillian Moreno at Mason-Dixon Knitting all about sock yarn versus fingering weight yarn to be fascinating, because I never really thought about the differences.
But there are differences between yarns made specifically for socks (fiber content and construction chief among them) and those designed for shawls and other projects.
That doesn’t mean you can’t use one in place of the other, but you need to be thoughtful about it. She’s got all the advice you need. You’ll definitely want to give this one a read if you’re a sock knitter or a shawl knitter or otherwise use fingering weight yarn for different projects.
