Gift ideas that are presented for Father’s Day often bother me because they assume that every guy plays golf, likes to grill, wears ties, etc. (I guess just like all Mother’s Day gift ideas include flowers, scented bath stuff and candles.)
It’s hard for me to know what the dads in your life might like for Father’s Day, but here are a few ideas that might be fun for dad for any holiday you want to knit him something for.
If you’re looking for something fast, why not stitch up a bottle cozy? The Classic Bottle Cozy from Knitty Natty uses sock yarn, and you can stripe it in team colors if your dude has a favorite team, or just use whatever yarn you have on hand. You can find this pattern on Ravelry.
Or try this pretty bottle sweater knitting pattern from Lucky Fox Knits on Etsy. This is the perfect one for using all your sock yarn leftovers, and it even has a cute little ribbed collar for the top of the bottle.
If your dad guy is more of a coffee drinker, check out the free Main Street pattern from Tin Can Knits. This little cabled cozy is worked in the round with DK weight yarn, and you can grab the pattern on Ravelry.
You can also stitch up a set of dad-themed coasters like these from LoveCrafts to show dad you care about him and keeping his furniture tidy.
There are all sorts of dad-themed washcloths out there, including the No. 1 Dad from Knit a Little Graphs (you can find more details on Ravelry), Dad by Ezcareknits (also on Ravelry) and even one stitched with Homer Simpson, from Lil Knit of This n That.
For a slightly larger project, you can knit dad a hat. Of course there are tons of men’s hat knitting pattern our there, but if your dad person happens to be a cat dad, you can stitch up the Cute Cat Dad hat, which is a free pattern from Vetka Knitwear. You could adjust the lettering to day dog dad instead, or just dad with or without the paw prints.
If the guy you’re knitting for has a favorite sports team you can use their colors on the Team Spirit hat from Etsy seller Knit Knots by Julie Co. Or just pick any three or four colors (or more, or fewer) you like to knit this easy stockinette and ribbed hat. worked in super bulky yarn.
Another cute option is the Dad pillow from Roxanne. This one is done with stranded knitting and uses worsted weight yarn. If you really wanted to wow him, you could also use the same design on the front of a sweater. You can find the pillow pattern on Ravelry.
Of course you can knit dad some socks or a sweater or anything else you’d knit for anyone else, but I hope this gives you some ideas outside of the golf club cozy, bow tie, grilling apron genre of projects. (Though of course if your dad folk are into those things, knit those things, too!)
