Free Pattern – Headband/Earwarmers

February 21, 2010 by Terrye

headband-pattern-free

Up here in the frozen North (it’s been snowing now for about 4 months, and there’s not really an end in sight, but we’re used to that, we revel in it, we can take it, bring it on and all that), we live in “layers”. There are some days when there’s not been an ear warmer/headband ever knitted that will take on -40F. And then the days get warmer (“warm” is relative, when it’s -40 one week, the next week +20 is “warm”), a headband/ear warmer is just the ticket!

This free pattern, knitted in bulky yarn will have your ears all warmed up in no time at all. http://tmatthewsfineart.blogspot.com/2010/01/free-knitting-pattern-headband-ear_15.html

This is cute – my daughter is a pony-tail girl, so she doesn’t like to wear a hat, but a nice headband?!! Nice! Like Becky, I’ve got plenty of nice stash to whip some up.

I love this and I love that it uses a button so that you can use it around your hairstyle! I’m also a pony-tail girl and love headbands in the winter, though the stretch over your head kind tend to still wreak havoc on the style.

Thank you for publishing your pattern for free! These headbands/ear warmers are a HUGE here in Alaska! I kept contemplating buying one to take it apart so I could figure out how to make them. Now, I can without having to buy one. I’m not one to buy things I like if I can make them myself! Super easy pattern!!! Thank you again!

I have been wanting to make some of these headbands for my granddaughters in Collage. I was going to buy one the other day but I thought $10 was too much for such a small amt. of yarn. Now I can make them in their school colors. Thank you so much for posting them.

A Blanket Knitting Pattern Where Yarn Selection is Everything

Many times when I write these posts I will say something like “you can use any yarn you want” or “this would be a great stash-busting project.” That’s just how my mind works. And my stash, too, since I probably have sweater quantity of two or three yarns at most, but tons of singles and odd balls and leftovers.

Blankets are generally a really good way to use up those bits, but in this case, I think you’re going to want to plan it out a bit better.

Looking at photos of the Color Study Blanket from Purl Soho, it looks like it’s made with two yarns held together, and that block in the center is worked with one of each color from the adjoining sides to make a mixed up color.

But that’s not actually how it’s done. This is three separate colors (four, really, with the neutrals in the corners) chosen form a yarn with an expansive palette so they play off each other. The project calls for a worsted weight superwash wool, which is a great choice for a blanket that’s both warm and washable.

This pattern was originally designed by Laura Ferguson and was updated by Hiromi Glover. It is worked in one piece in garter stitch intarsia, which is a great way to learn the intarsia technique if you don’t already know it. It comes in crib or throw sizes.

Despite the introduction to this post, I am going to go ahead and say that, yes, of course you could do this blanket with scraps or odd balls or even just choose five colors that don’t blend together so easily. But I really do love the look of the color play, and I think it would be worth your time to find colors that play well together to get a similar effect.

This pattern is available for free from Purl Soho.
