Giveaway: Great Knit Sweaters for Guys Big & Small

July 11, 2016 by Sarah White

Great Knit Sweaters for Gusy Big and SmallCongrats to Jeanne!

If you have a guy — big or little — who you like to knit for, you probably know it can be frustrating to find sweaters that you want to knit and that they want to wear.

The designs in Great Knit Sweaters for Guys Big & Small by Andrea Sanchez aim to fix that problem, with lots of great, relatively simple for the guys but not too boring for the knitter projects they will actually want to wear.

The book has 12 sweaters, sized from child’s size 2 up to men’s XXL, so you can knit the same basic sweaters multiple times, for every guy in the family. Check out all the projects on Ravelry.

Honestly, I would knit a lot of these sweaters, maybe with some different details or more color, for my daughter or myself as well, but they are great staple pieces for guys, too. From a baseball type sweater to a raglan to a circular-yoke sweater, there’s a lot of fun stuff to choose from, whoever you’re knitting for.

If you’d like a chance to win a copy of this book, leave a comment on this post before the end of the day Sunday, July 17. I’d love to know about the guys in your life you knit for.

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing the giveaway with your knitting friends. Good luck!

Who wouldn’t love to have a new book of patterns designated just for the “hims” in your life?! I certainly would! They can sure be hard to buy for, especially the older they get, so this would be perfect!! Thanks for the opportunity!!

I have 2 main guys… My hubbo & my son… I’ve knit quite a few things for my son that he wears (and has worn out). He’s a college student ant the biggest hit in the past few years was washable wool earflap hat in school colors. One of his friends even tried to commission me to make one for him until my son intervened.

I knit for my husband and 23-year-old son – in green and white – which are the colors of their favorite soccer team.

I knit for both my husband and my son – but it is so hard to find patterns that they like!

I’m the guy I knit sweaters for. Most of my guy friends only want caps or scarves, and one wants a blanket for his king sized bed (Yeah, good luck with that one, Clyde!) I’ve only knit a sweater for one other guy, years ago. He wasn’t my boyfriend, but he disappeared anyway. Or maybe I did, I can’t remember.

I’m familiar with Andrea’s work, through Ravelry and her blog. It’s great that all but one of these patterns is for all sizes, and that the adult sizes range to include us enhanced circumference guys. Thanks for the giveaway!

I used to knit for my husband, he’s the man in my life! Now I only knit simple and quick things so he got a hat but not a sweater lately. It would be nice to start again a real project.

Knitting for men is a little bit difficult sometimes. They prefer dark colors, straight lines, no decor…. it can be boring but when I knit for my husband I do it with love and I know that a special smile will brighten the day!

Love to have these – my sons/grandson would enjoy the fruits of my labor!

I’ve made things for almost everyone else – I’d love to knit a sweater for my husband!

Vintage Bed Socks Knitting Pattern – A Cozy Little Gift Project With Old-Fashioned Charm

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about a pair of handmade bed socks, isn’t there? They are practical, pretty, and just the sort of project that feels like it belongs beside a cup of tea, a good film, and a basket of wool that is pretending not to be overflowing.

This vintage Bed Socks knitting pattern is one of those sweet little patterns that still feels useful today. Originally from the Jaeger Hand-Knit Series No. 44, the design features a simple garter-stitch foot, a ribbed cuff, eyelet holes, a crochet chain tie, and little tassel-style pom-poms at the front. The original pattern even describes them as “a very acceptable present,” and honestly, I don’t think much has changed there.

These would make a lovely handmade gift for someone who is always cold, someone recovering or resting, or anyone who appreciates a bit of old-fashioned comfort. They would also be beautiful as a Mother’s Day gift, a winter birthday present, a Christmas stocking filler, or a “just because you deserve cozy feet” project.

The pattern itself is delightfully simple in construction. The socks are knitted flat, beginning at the lower edge, with the foot worked in garter stitch before moving into the ribbed upper section. The decorative eyelet row allows for a crochet chain cord to be threaded through, and the finishing tassels give the socks that charming vintage look. The top edge is finished with a row of double crochet, which adds a neat handmade touch.

The original measurements list the socks as approximately 10½ inches from the top to the lower edge of the heel, with a 9¾ inch foot length, and the pattern notes that the size can be adapted. As with many vintage knitting patterns, modern knitters will want to check gauge carefully and choose a soft yarn that feels comfortable against the skin. A cozy wool blend, soft acrylic, or washable yarn would all work depending on whether you are making these for everyday use or as a special gift.

I especially love that this pattern has that “giftable” quality without being a massive project. It is small enough to feel achievable, but still special enough that the finished pair looks thoughtful. And let’s be honest, handmade socks with pom-poms are always going to beat a last-minute candle from the supermarket.

The PDF version has been cleaned up and formatted for easier reading while keeping the original vintage design intact. It also includes a modern pink mockup image and the original vintage scan, so you get both the historical charm and a fresh idea of how the finished socks could look today.

If you enjoy vintage knitting patterns, cozy handmade gifts, or quick projects that feel useful rather than just decorative, this sweet little bed socks pattern is a lovely one to add to your collection.

You can find the Vintage Bed Socks Knitting Pattern PDF in the CraftGossip Etsy store.

For supplies, this is also a nice stash-friendly project. A soft yarn from Mary Maxim or Amazon would work well, and if you make pom-poms regularly, a small pom-pom maker is one of those inexpensive tools that saves a surprising amount of fiddling.
