I was cleaning up my office over the weekend and I found a bunch more stuff to give away, lucky you!

This week we’re going to do Once Upon a Knit by Genevieve Miller. This fun book includes 28 projects inspired by fairy tales. You’ll find everything from a Cinderella poll play set complete with pumpkin carriage bag to socks covered with spooky trees and a full moon.

There’s a red riding hood and coordinating basket, a lacy shrug fit for Maleficent, an infinity scarf that looks like Rumpelstiltskin’s straw-spun gold, mitts for bookish Belle and a cardigan fit for Prince Charming.

It’s a cute collection with items for girls, men and women, as well as some home accessories.

  2. I love all the Grimm’s fairy tales but my favorite fairy tale has to be Billy Goats Gruff. I would read to my little sister before we went to bed and would change my voice to be “gruff”. We would laugh and laugh! Then my mom would come in and tell us we were done for the night since we were having too much fun.

  7. What, a knitting book I do not have???? How can it be you ask…..think I could make it into a fairy tail, but nothing as good as the three little pigs as told to me by my grandmother that I called “Grammie”. Gosh I loved her and still miss her even tho I. Have been a grandmother for a few years..thank you and enjoy the holidays..Elaine

  16. Happy feet is my favorite because of the message it conveys. The nutcracker ballet is my all time favorite at Christmas. The Happy Knitter

  18. I grew upon the fairy tales. I read them to my children every night and do not have the chance to read to my two young granddaughters as they live 13 hours away from their “Grabu ” . I would love to knit them some fairy tale capes etc. from across the miles to feel the love knitted in every stitch! Bella loves the sweaters I knit for her now , so I know the “Once Upon a Time” knits would rock her little world! Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy to thrill the girls!

  19. I actually teach creative writing through Fairy Tales to elementary school after school students – this would give me the perfect fashion statement! My favorite? Probably the Three Little Pigs because the kids LOVE the huffing and puffing!

  20. Cinderella ultimately my favorite. My favorite movies are based on ‘Cinderella’; ‘Ever After’ with Drew Barrymore, “Enchanted” with Amy Adams, ‘Ella Enchanted” with Anne Hathaway, ‘a Cinderella Story’ with Hillary Duff, ‘If the Shoe Fits”, “Cinderella”, etc. However with regards to knitting, “Little Red Riding Hood” tops the lists with all the glorious possiblities for knitting rep capes and their allure!

  22. I think my favorite is still the goose girl. I really like Belle too. I guess is cause I am good with beasts myself! I’ve been looking for something to make for my own Prince Charming, and I also have two little princesses (my grand-daughters) I make stuff for all the time. This book would really be a handy tool for me!

    Currently I really enjoy the “Once Upon A Time” series.

  24. Little Red Riding Hood… the original version where things don’t end well because the story was used as a cautionary tale.

Totoro Knitting Patterns

We’re a big Studio Ghibli household, and while they are sometimes very protective of their copyrights (as evidenced by the number of patterns on Ravelry that were removed from the service when it received a takedown notice back in 2021), there are still a fair number of Totoro knitting patterns (as well as other designs I’m sure we’ll get to someday). Let’s check them out!

Yaya Labs has a cute plush Totoro that looks like it might stand up on its own. The pattern is available on LoveCrafts, and it calls for DK or light worsted weight yarn in four colors. The pattern is considered advanced but it does include a photo tutorial. It stands 10.6 inches or 27 cm tall.

A similar pattern can be found a Shino Craft, which doesn’t have the leaf hat but does include little hands, and the legs aren’t as separate from the body. This one calls for sport weight yarn and is knit flat on two needles. 

All Made Here has a Totoro pouch that is super cute and looks pretty easy to knit. It measures 14 by 18 cm and is rated for advanced beginners. You can get the pattern when you subscribe to updates or follow the designer on Instagram. 

Stitch Totoro on a sweater with the Totorogenseren sweater from Anna-Sofia Vintersol. This free download on Ravelry uses worsted/aran weight yarn in two or three colors. The pattern comes in nine sizes, with a chest measurement ranging from 77 to 149 cm. 

The Forest Spirit Fair Isle Jumper from Kraft with Kindrex features a row of Totoros on the circular yoke, along with other little colorwork designs. The design includes three sizes, with chest measurements ranging from 91 to 101 cm. It calls for 4 ply (that’s fingering/sock weight in other parts of the world). 

Or you can stitch Totoro as part of a project with more Ghibli characters, as on the Magical Anime Knit Sweater (a longtime bucket list item for me) from The Bearded Sewist. This on has a circular yoke and rows of different characters including Totoro, Ponyo, soot sprites, Calcifer and more. The pattern comes in four sizes and is rated intermediate/advanced. It calls for DK weight yarn and you can grab a copy on Ravelry. 

Or try Katharina Kuntz’s Anime Scarf, also on Ravelry. This one is a double knit scarf worked in fingering weight yarn in two colors, with allover designs from Studio Ghibli movies. She started by knitting the movies in chronological order but gave that up after she realized all her favorites would be in the middle and therefore not visible when worn. You can probably rearrange the motifs further somewhat if you want to showcase your favorites.
