Giveaway: Quick Nordic Knits

March 21, 2016 by Sarah White

Quick Nordic Knits giveaway

Mary is our winner!

When I reviewed this book when it came out back in 2010, I noted that I wasn’t sure the word “quick” should have been used in the name, because while socks, hats and mittens (which are the types of pattern found in Quick Nordic Knits by Ann-Mari Nilsson, the patterns often use small yarn and needles that, combined with colorwork, don’t make for very fast knitting.

That said, the patterns are lovely and will definitely keep you entertained as you knit and warm when you wear the projects you’ve made. There are great traditional speckled patterns, solid-color cable projects, plaid, stripes and traditional colorwork motifs like stars and trees.

There are patterns here for all skill levels, though having a comfort with circular knitting would be helpful.

If you’d like a chance to win this book, leave a comment on this post before the end of the day Sunday, March 27. Since we’re in a time of seasonal transition right now, I’d love to know where you are and what the weather is like there today.

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing, and good luck!

I am in Colorado and the snow from the last two snow storms is finally starting to melt. Thank you for sharing this giveaway. I have loved this knitting style ever since I went to Norway when I was in High School. The outdoor markets were so colorful thanks to all the knitted sweaters and accessories.

I am in Montana outside the gates to Glacier Park and although the winters can be fairly harsh, we have had a very mild one this year. Today will be in the 40’s. These are the most gorgeous patterns I have seen and those colors are so bright and cheerful. Thanks for the give away! Wonderful act of kindness!!!!!!!!!

I love the look of Nordic knits, but have never attempted to try it. The word “Quick” in the title is very appealing. I live in NC and today it’s sunny and about 50. Last week it was in the high 80’s and the rest of this week should get back into the 70’s. Azaleas and dogwoods are gorgeous now. . . as long as it doesn’t freeze!

I’m in southern MS , the wind is blowing hard out of the north, and temos to fall in the 30’s for the next couple of days. Then it will warm up & rain, with highs in the low 70’s. Everything is in bloom, so the lows will affect the new blooms, but with summer, all will be as it should be here in the south.

Southwestern Oregon on the Rogue River. We are having a period of liquid sunshine. We are no longer worried about another drought year so we are happy! It’s only in the 50s but will warm up later this week. Trees are budding out and the flowers are blooming. It’s beautiful!

Hello from what I lovingly (cough cough) call the frozen north! I am in North Dakota and, sigh, temps are actually seasonal… meaning mid-thirties during the day 🙁 Being a Texan at heart (from Galveston Island) I had to learn to crochet and knit in self defense of the weather when I moved up here! lol I consider myself still very much a learner and would love to add this book to my slowly growing library I refer to as I try to learn new stitches and techniques. Thanks so much for the chance to win this book!

I am NOT at home in Northern California where it was snowing today, I am in the West Indies where it is a balmy 82F with a constant gentle breeze. Because I’m enjoying possibly the best weather on earth, I probably don’t deserve to win the book, but I’d love to have it just the same.

I’d love a chance to win this! I just got back from Iceland and picked up some lovely Icelandic wool, intending to make some mittens. It’d be even greater if I could use a pattern inspired by that part of the world.

I’m in Chicago and it’s very cold and rainy here, unfortunately. 🙁

I love Nordic-style knits! I’m in Wisconsin and today we’re sloppy. We received close to 12″ of snow Wed-Thurs this week but today it’s in the mid-40’s so it’s disappearing fast.

Add a Little Lace to Your Knitting Patterns

If you’re new to lace knitting or just aren’t sure how to incorporate the technique into garments, check out these tops and sweaters that use lace as a decorative element.

The easiest lace out there is eyelets, and you can practice them plenty with this eyelet covered sweater from Knitcro Addict. It uses light/DK weight yarn and is worked in four pieces knit flat. It’s intended to be a little cropped and a little oversized, and includes sizes XS to XXL in the pattern.

If you’re in parts of the world where it’s getting colder as you read this, the Nora sweater from Bummbul might be a good choice. This is actually a great one for learning lace because it’s worked in super bulky yarn, which makes it easier to see what you’re doing and makes the lace super graphic. This one just comes in one size, with a 42 inch (106) cm bust, but that could fit a variety of people depending on how much ease you like.

Minimi Knit Design has a cute allover lace cardigan worked in one piece from the bottom up. It’s worked in lace weight mohair held double, which maybe isn’t the best for those new to lace (because it can be hard to rip out) but it sure is pretty. Sizes range to fit from 30 to 66 inches/76 to 168 cm bust measurements.

If you’d rather not have lace all over your sweater, you can knit the Lumi sweater from Originally Lovely, which has a chevron lace pattern on the yoke and is otherwise worked in reverse stockinette stitch. (It’s worked inside out so you don’t have to purl every stitch.) The pattern has 9 sizes from XS to 5XL and uses worsted weight yarn.

Or try the super romantic sookie blouse from Trust the mojo (available on Ravelry). This sweet top is started working flat from the bottom up and has a V-neck and I-cord edgings. The sleeves are worked separately in the round, and the pieces are all joined together to work in one piece to finish off the top. It comes in eight sizes and is available in English and French.

You can also pair lacy sleeves with an otherwise plain top, like on the Starflower Wrap from Annelise Driscoll Gingrow. This intermediate pattern makes a wrap sweater with generous lacy sleeves and a double wrap belt. The pattern has nine sizes, from XS to 5XL, and is available for free from Hobbi.
