Here’s a great giveaway for all the sock lovers in the house. Have you seen the Sock Ruler?

It’s a wide plastic ruler with the measurements on the top (both inches and centimeters). You can slide it into the cuff or toe of a sock and more accurately measure the length of a cuff, foot or heel flap than you can with a conventional tape measure.

Of course you can use it to measure other tubes, too, such as hats and mitts.

It’s a really simple but really cool thing that might even help you knit more accurate socks. How great is that?

  3. I think I’ve knitted about 15 socks. About 5pairs. No, my math isn’t faulty. I need to find some friends who only need one sock! Thanks for the chance!

  5. I’ve lost count over the years. I currently have around 14 pairs in my sock drawer. And I always have a pair on the needles as my go-to-meeting knitting.

  6. I think I’m close to 10 pairs. Hand knit socks are starting to take over my sock drawer, and I’m phasing out store bought socks with each pair.

  9. I’ve have only managed to finish one pair for myself, have another waiting for it’s partner and another started! I did knit 4 pairs from a WW1 pattern for an amateur production of the play ‘My Boy Jack’ a couple of years ago.

  11. I’ll be interested to know if this is useful for toe-up socks, too. I made about 6 pairs for myself last year, and 6 pairs as wedding gifts (to help them not get “cold feet!”)

  15. I took a sock knitting class – we knit baby booties, as they have all the parts. But I’d love to knit a pair of adult socks! I have some beautiful soft black yarn I’d like to use for my husband.

  18. My mom takes blood thinners,so she’s always cold. While I have 5 pair of socks, mom gets a pair every other month. A pair for the day and a pair to sleep in. Last year I knit 14 pair. A couple were Christmas gifts for my adult children.

I have not knit any but I am praticing…..Ive read so much on sock knitting it scared…lol the turning of the heel, the ladders, etc…using reinforcing threads…..so much to learn…..it sure creates fear the way some ppl describe it…but I am attempting it as it is a dream to be able to make them so easy like in a day…..i am praticing my ribbing and increasing and decrasesing on dpns….some is easy, some are hard….but it is getting smoother and better tension,,,,,my neice has lots of tube dresses with crocheted overlay to hide the errors…lol

  27. I think i’m on my 5th pair of socks for this year. If my feet weren’t so large, I might knit many more. This tool would definitely be useful for me.

  29. Oo, what a clever thing! Hmm…. I’ve made.. maybe seven or eight pair of socks thus far. But I’ve made at least ten pair of fingerless gloves, & this would be useful for those too.

  31. I’ve been knitting socks for almost 37 years (started at 15) always top down on 4 dpns so that’s somewhere between 50-100 pairs in sizes from baby to size 14. I made over the knee sock for a man in size 14 with 20 inch leg length so I would like to know where to buy the ruler as I need more than one. Love hearing about other sock knitters

  34. I’ve only made two pairs of socks – the first took well over a year. Last month I learned to make TAAT in worsted weight – my next pair will be a pair in fingering. This is a great tool!

  35. I’ve only been knitting socks for about three years, but I’ve completed 47 pairs. Love my hand knot socks!

  36. I’ve made at least a couple dozen pairs. Measuring is always a challenge, and I’d love a sock ruler. I like to knit socks for friends and family because it’s easier to get a good fit than a sweater. And hats and scarves aren’t always welcomed.

Knit and Felt Some Tabi Style Slippers

The felted slipper craze that began last year doesn’t seem like it’s fading away. The Sailor Slippers, often striped knit and felted slippers made with super bulky yarn, because the project of the moment late last year (check out more knit slipper options in this post all about sailor slippers) and they’re still consistently popular with knitters.

Which makes sense because they are fun and fast to knit, and seeing them go from this giant thing to something that actually fits a foot feels a little magical. 

I have always loved felting (in fact my first book was about felting knitting) and it’s always fun for me to see people rediscover this technique. 

If you’ve knit enough plain slippers to fit all the feet you know, maybe it’s time to stitch up some tabi style slippers instead. 

Maymade Knits has designed these cute tabi ballerina slippers, made with bulky yarn and felted. They’re worked flat at first and then in rounds, and are available in 10 EU sizes (the Internet tells me add 31 to your American shoe size to get your EU size). The designer says the slippers are meant to have a close fit and you should choose a size a little smaller than your foot for the ideal fit. 

The pattern includes a video tutorial along with the written pattern. 

You can grab this pattern on Ravelry. The same designer has her own version of the striped felted slipper as well, called Sarah’s Striped Slippers. These are worked in super bulky yarn and have a contrasting foot and a striped body. These are knit flat and seamed and there are 7 size options available. Check that pattern out here if you’re looking for a more traditional slipper shape. They also look roomier so you can wear them with socks if you like.
