Giveaway: Sock Ruler

November 23, 2015 by Sarah White

sock ruler giveaway

Congratulations to Enid!

Here’s a great giveaway for all the sock lovers in the house. Have you seen the Sock Ruler?

It’s a wide plastic ruler with the measurements on the top (both inches and centimeters). You can slide it into the cuff or toe of a sock and more accurately measure the length of a cuff, foot or heel flap than you can with a conventional tape measure.

Of course you can use it to measure other tubes, too, such as hats and mitts.

It’s a really simple but really cool thing that might even help you knit more accurate socks. How great is that?

If you’d like to win one, leave a comment on this post by the end of the day Sunday, Nov. 29. I’d love to know how many socks (or pairs of socks) you have knit. I think I’m close to 10 by now but I always want more!

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing, and good luck!

My Aunt Charlotte knits on socks every day – she supplies everyone in the family (which is fairly large) with at least one new pair of socks every year. We all consider ourselves lucky to be on her sock rotation. She would love this ruler.

I have not knit socks before but am interested in trying. I have however knit a Christmas Stocking but that is not the same.

I believe I have passed the 25 pair mark! Socks are so fun!

I probably knit about 2-4 pairs a year, some for me, some to give away. I like knitting socks, & I love giving them to someone who’s never had a pair before. This would make gift sock- knitting so much easier!

i would love to win this sock ruler for my sister. She knits all of my socks for me. I love to wear my hand knitted socks. I have 7 pairs she had knitted for me. She also has knitted our other sister 2 pairs.

I’ve knit exactly 3/4 of one sock…just not my thing! This ruler, however, would be great to measure hats, sleeves or anything else knit in the round.

I have only knit 1 pair of socks so far but I plan on knitting more. I love the pair that I did make! This sock ruler would be awesome!

I don’t knit socks as I have trouble turning the heel however my friend knits socks all the time. In fact, this is what she does every evening wile watching TV with her husband. My thinking is, if I win this ruler and give it to her, I might receive more socks.

My feet get cold [even in the Summer]. And my toes get blue in the winter. I have been thinking about making some woolen ones but the complexity of it was scaring me. This Sock Ruler would really simplify things and I’d be able to make some.

  21. Amy McGlynn says

    November 23, 2015 at 12:35 pm

Hmm. I need a pair apiece for christmas and birthday for 8 people, so that is 16, and then a further 20 pairs or so for others. Let’s say about 30 pairs a year. Yeah.

  22. Tracy says

    November 23, 2015 at 12:40 pm

I’m presently working in my 3rd pair. As for how many skein/balls of sock yarn that are awaiting their final destiny in my stash? I’d rather not say…

  23. Bonnie Blackburn says

    November 23, 2015 at 12:42 pm

I have never knitted a pair of socks. But I just brought some sock yarn and am trying to learn the magic loop method. I would live to win the Sock Ruler to help me with my new adventure.

    Thank you!

I don’t knit, but I’ve crocheted some baby socks and lots of slipper socks in the past.

  25. RedcatCrochet says

    November 23, 2015 at 12:57 pm

I’m getting ready to cast on my first pair of knitted socks. I’ve crocheted socks before but have shied away from knit ones. It’s really easy to try on a crocheted sock partway through making it to check the fit. Not easy to do same with a knit one. So I would love this ruler to save me from the inevitable frogging that is going to happen. Thank you for the giveaway 🙂

I learned to knit socks in middle school, but for some reason don’t make lots of them. I knit 3-4 pairs a year. Measuring the length of foot is the biggest hassle. This ruler sounds very promising. Thank you!

I have knit about 15 pair of socks, mostly vanilla, but a few lace.

I am knitting another pair of socks right now. I don’t even know how many pair of socks I have knit over the years, but I am thinking it was approx. 3 dozen pairs. I would love to win this ruler as I am always knitting socks. It sounds like a great idea too!

  33. Sue Miller says

I’ve knit about 20 pairs of socks. Started with tube socks because I didn’t think I could ever do a heel turn and gusset. Still haven’t tried that. My heel of choice is the afterthought heel. The great thing about socks is that they are portable.

Socks are usually my go to project when I’m traveling. I knit cuff down on DPNs. When I knit my first pair, I couldn’t understand the heel turn. I thought there was a mistake in the pattern. When I called the shop to ask I was given one of my favorite pieces of knitting advice. “Knit it, don’t think it.”

Knit and Felt Some Tabi Style Slippers

The felted slipper craze that began last year doesn’t seem like it’s fading away. The Sailor Slippers, often striped knit and felted slippers made with super bulky yarn, because the project of the moment late last year (check out more knit slipper options in this post all about sailor slippers) and they’re still consistently popular with knitters.

Which makes sense because they are fun and fast to knit, and seeing them go from this giant thing to something that actually fits a foot feels a little magical.

I have always loved felting (in fact my first book was about felting knitting) and it’s always fun for me to see people rediscover this technique.

If you’ve knit enough plain slippers to fit all the feet you know, maybe it’s time to stitch up some tabi style slippers instead.

Maymade Knits has designed these cute tabi ballerina slippers, made with bulky yarn and felted. They’re worked flat at first and then in rounds, and are available in 10 EU sizes (the Internet tells me add 31 to your American shoe size to get your EU size). The designer says the slippers are meant to have a close fit and you should choose a size a little smaller than your foot for the ideal fit.

The pattern includes a video tutorial along with the written pattern.

You can grab this pattern on Ravelry. The same designer has her own version of the striped felted slipper as well, called Sarah’s Striped Slippers. These are worked in super bulky yarn and have a contrasting foot and a striped body. These are knit flat and seamed and there are 7 size options available. Check that pattern out here if you’re looking for a more traditional slipper shape. They also look roomier so you can wear them with socks if you like.
