Giveaway: Under 100 Knit Collection

May 2, 2016 by Sarah White

under 100 knit collection

Congratulations to Donna!

It’s become a semiannual tradition to give away a copy of the Under 100 Knit Collection from Knit Picks because there’s always such a great response to it.

This book packs 30 patterns, for projects ranging from hats to mitts, cowls to boot toppers, even wee shawls and socks, all of which use 100 grams of yarn or less. (You can see all the patterns on Ravelry.)

It’s perfect for when you have one ball of a cherished yarn you actually want to knit with but have no idea what to make. Or when you want to use up odd balls on a little project that can handle different colors in stripes or colorwork.

The projects make great gifts, too, and there’s something especially gratifying about using your stash to make something special for someone else.

If you’d like a chance to win a copy of this book, and you live in the United States, leave a comment on this post by the end of the day Sunday, May 8. I’d love to hear about a special little skein that’s been waiting in your stash for the perfect project. I actually have a couple of skeins of Knit Picks Diadem — a combo of alpaca and mulberry silk — I need to find a project for. A tiny shawl would probably be just the thing.

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing, and good luck!

I was just this morning looking at my “special” stash … mostly gifts from fellow knitters. My sister likes to pick skeins for me based on the colorway name like Silver Lining. I have some Anzula Sebastian in the Poppy colorway that I splurged on when missing my childhood California home.

I have some beautiful sock yarn I bought so long ago I don’t even remember the brand. I wore out its partner ball trying to learn a sock pattern, so making something with it would be redeeming, lol!

Goodness! I have gorgeous silk blends, mohair! Alpaca, painted cotton! all one skein-ers:) A yarn store went out of biz in our area, & all my towns’ thrift stores got their merchandise. I never buy up all the yarn they have, leaving some behind for the “next guy”. I don’t keep anything I make except for “Oops…!” projects (you guys know what I’m talkin’ ’bout) I do projects for gifts and donations. It makes knitting fun when you know you’re doing something handmade for someone.
I’d get a huge kick out of a book like this. I prefer printed patterns over digital, I don’t do “apps” and it’s difficult for me to read pattern instructions from a bright computer screen.

I spent several very broke years only getting yarn from thrift shops, usually a bag of a dozen skeins for $3.99 – but they were all different yarns, one or two of each kind, and seldom similar in weight, fiber or color. I have so many orphan skeins, I always welcome great patterns for smaller amounts of yarn.

Hi Sarah – I have been eyeing this book for ages now! I also have some diadem in my stash (4 ply and DK) and haven’t got a clue what to do with it! 🙂 It scares me because it looks so delicate…but so soft and beautiful too!

But my super-special yarn is 2 X 50g skeins of 100% cashmere in sock weight from Lux Adorna. So beautiful! Would love to find something extra gorgeous for those skeins. 🙂

A Blanket Knitting Pattern Where Yarn Selection is Everything

Many times when I write these posts I will say something like “you can use any yarn you want” or “this would be a great stash-busting project.” That’s just how my mind works. And my stash, too, since I probably have sweater quantity of two or three yarns at most, but tons of singles and odd balls and leftovers.

Blankets are generally a really good way to use up those bits, but in this case, I think you’re going to want to plan it out a bit better.

Looking at photos of the Color Study Blanket from Purl Soho, it looks like it’s made with two yarns held together, and that block in the center is worked with one of each color from the adjoining sides to make a mixed up color.

But that’s not actually how it’s done. This is three separate colors (four, really, with the neutrals in the corners) chosen form a yarn with an expansive palette so they play off each other. The project calls for a worsted weight superwash wool, which is a great choice for a blanket that’s both warm and washable.

This pattern was originally designed by Laura Ferguson and was updated by Hiromi Glover. It is worked in one piece in garter stitch intarsia, which is a great way to learn the intarsia technique if you don’t already know it. It comes in crib or throw sizes.

Despite the introduction to this post, I am going to go ahead and say that, yes, of course you could do this blanket with scraps or odd balls or even just choose five colors that don’t blend together so easily. But I really do love the look of the color play, and I think it would be worth your time to find colors that play well together to get a similar effect.

This pattern is available for free from Purl Soho.
