Halloween Costumes to Knit for Your Cat

October 16, 2015 by Sarah White

Halloween crafting is always fun, but there is something extra hilarious about tiny handmade costumes for cats. If you have ever looked at your feline and thought, “You would look ridiculous in a witch hat,” then this roundup is definitely for you. From playful little hats to themed accessories and costume-inspired knits, these cat knitting patterns lean heavily into the cute, quirky side of Halloween. The original post rounds up a mix of free and paid ideas, including themed hats, scarves, a bow tie, a witch hat, a lion’s mane, and even more costume options for adventurous knitters.

Of course, anyone who has ever tried to dress a cat knows success depends very much on the mood of the cat. Some will tolerate a quick photo and a few treats, while others will give you exactly three seconds before dramatically flopping over or disappearing under the bed. That is part of the charm. These patterns are less about serious dress-up and more about creating a funny, memorable little Halloween moment with your pet. Whether you want something sweet, silly, seasonal, or just completely over the top, there are plenty of ideas here to inspire your next easy knit. Many of the designs featured in the roundup focus on hats and lightweight accessories, which makes them a bit more practical for cats than full outfits.

This collection is perfect for knitters who love novelty projects, quick seasonal makes, and handmade gifts with personality. If you already knit for pets, or you are simply looking for a fun October project that is guaranteed to get attention, these cat costume knitting patterns are a charming place to start. Just keep the camera ready, keep the treats nearby, and remember that your cat is very likely judging you the entire time.

In last week’s roundup of patterns for dogs, I promised I would share some Halloween knitting patterns for cats this week. While they might have been a little harder to find, they make up for it in cuteness, and how much it tends to annoy a cat when you dress it up in clothes.

Spindles and Spices wins the award for the best and largest number of cat knitting patterns that I can find anywhere. She has a whole series of international themed hats for cats, including:

  • Japan (ninja face mask)
  • Turkey (fez)
  • France (beret)
  • United States (Statue of Liberty headband with bonus torch toy)
  • United Kingdom (bobby hat)
  • Thailand (traditional headdress)
  • North Pole (Santa Hat)
  • Germany (Oktoberfest inspired hat)

Now I could have stopped looking right there and been pretty happy, but here are a few more options.

Why not a Harry Potter house scarf from GuenKnits? Or a knit bow tie from Channeling Madame Defarge? (Watch kitty carefully with things around his neck, of course.)

A witch hat? (That’s from Barbra Szabrowicz.) Or a cat’s mane? (Mer Almagro.)

And if you’re willing to pay for a pattern, which you should be with all this cuteness, Lindsey Smith also has a Santa hat, bear costume and frog costume for cats (and more for crocheters, so check those out, too, if you’re comfortable with that craft).

Have you ever or would you ever make a costume for your cat? I’d love to hear about it!

I’d make that lion’s mane in a heartbeat for our ginger boy…that is, if I think he’d put up with it!
