Join Me to Make Upcycled Yarn

August 3, 2023 by Sarah White

Have you ever wanted to turn old T-shirts, leftover fabric, worn out sheets or even plastic bags into something you can use? How about making them into yarn?

I’m teaching a couple of classes at the Rebecca Page Upcycling Summit (coming up Aug. 14-18) all about how to make fabric, shirts, plastic bags and other textiles into yarn, and showing you one thing you can do with it — knitting and crocheting baskets of various shapes and sizes.

The summit is a weeklong event featuring more than 20 classes on all sorts of creative reuse — from painting on glasses to embroidering jeans pockets, making earrings out of fabric scraps to fancying up a denim jacket.

My classes are both on Monday, Aug. 14, and throughout the summit the set of daily classes are available to watch for 24 hours. You can also purchase a VIP pass that gets you unlimited access to the classes, plus three more classes that people who attend the free summit don’t get access to (the VIP classes are about decorating tote bags, embroidering on sneakers and using leftover bits of leather and pleather).

This summit has a pretty heavy focus on sewing and embroidery, but there are projects for a range of crafts and skill levels. It should be a lot of fun and I’m super excited to share how to upcycle textiles with you. It’s a really easy process — you can break down a T-shirt into yarn in just a few minutes — and there are so many different ways you can use this yarn. I love it for baskets (as you’ll see in the class), as well as rugs, bags and anywhere else you want a sturdy, durable, washable fabric.

I hope you’ll check out the summit and watch my classes if you do sign up. See you for all the upcycling fun the week of Aug. 14!
