Knitting For Ukraine

February 24, 2022 by Shellie Wilson

How can you help Ukraine?

Ukraine’s citizens have been thrown into a state of war as Russia invaded the country in the early hours of Thursday morning, with explosions heard in the capital and other major cities.

Show your support for Ukraine with this Ukraine Knitting pattern (to be added). We are still trying to locate the best pattern but any rectangle will suffice. Or try this bunting in blue and yellow.

Check out this collection of knit for Ukraine knitting patterns.

Ukrainian Etsy sellers are also listing digital items for donations.

Ukrainians have put together a list of organizations where you can donate to help people affected by the crisis including this one https://unitedhelpukraine.org/

What crafts can you do to help support Ukraine? It is very early days, but with most wars, the usual items will be called upon, warm clothing and comfort items such as handmade teddys or toys for children who have lost everything and at times their whole families.

Knitting or crocheting items for Ukraine will be required, so plan ahead and grab out your patterns! We can help one stitch at a time.

While sending direct relief (monetary donations) is the best way to help, individual designers in Ukraine can also use our support. We’ll be sharing links from Ukrainian designers regularly for the foreseeable future. If you use Ravelry you can search for patterns by designers in Ukraine, or check out this Reddit post where people are sharing knitting patterns from Ukrainian designers.

Arne & Carlos are donating money from the sales of their Redd Barna patterns (currently at the top of their shop page) to Redd Barna, which is the Norwegian branch of Save the Children. They are working to help kids in Ukraine.

Miss Babs is donating 30 percent of sales from a selection of blue and yellow yarns to World Central Kitchen.

If you are a sewer check out our Sewing for Charities group here where we will add any charities accepting items for Ukraine as they become available. Loretta Napoleoni shared an appeal on Instagram to knit and crochet blankets for Ukrainian children. They are being collected in Spain so that’s a great way to help if you are in Europe.

As the world watches in horror at the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it can be easy to feel powerless to help. However, there are many ways that individuals can show their support for the Ukrainian people and their struggle for independence and freedom. One way is to raise awareness of the situation through social media and other means of communication, as well as by participating in peaceful protests and rallies.

Another way to show support is to donate to organizations that are working to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict, such as the Red Cross, UNICEF, and the Ukrainian World Congress.

Additionally, you can support local Ukrainian businesses and products, as well as Ukrainian culture and heritage. One way to do this is by learning more about Ukrainian folk art, literature, and music, and by sharing this knowledge with others.

Another way you can help is by knitting a Ukraine flag, or a pattern that represents Ukraine. You can use it as a way to raise awareness and show your support for Ukraine.

You can also consider supporting organizations that help the victims and refugees of war, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

In short, there are many ways that you can help Ukraine, whether it’s raising awareness, donating to humanitarian organizations, or supporting Ukrainian culture and heritage. Every little bit helps and together we can make a difference.

There are several other ways to use your knitting skills to support Ukraine, here are a few examples:

Charitable Knitting Patterns: You can find knitting patterns online where proceeds from sales will go to organizations that support Ukraine. For example, you can look for patterns that benefit organizations such as the Ukrainian Red Cross or UNICEF.

Ukrainian Folk-Inspired Patterns: There are many traditional Ukrainian knitting patterns that you can use to create items that showcase Ukrainian culture and heritage. You can find patterns for traditional Ukrainian shawls, scarves, and socks, as well as other items that are inspired by Ukrainian folk art.

Support Ukrainian Yarn Producers: You can also support Ukraine by purchasing yarn from Ukrainian producers. Many Ukrainian yarn companies have online shops where you can purchase yarn directly.

Knit for Ukrainian refugees: Knitting for refugees is a great way to show your support for people affected by the conflict in Ukraine, you can knit warm clothing such as scarfs, hats and mittens and donate them to organizations that work with refugees.

Knit for Ukrainian children: You can also knit for Ukrainian children by donating your finished items to organizations that work with children in Ukraine, such as UNICEF or Save the Children.

Raising Awareness: You can also use your knitting skills to raise awareness about the situation in Ukraine. For example, you could knit a Ukrainian flag and display it in a public place, or create a window display in your home to raise awareness about the situation in Ukraine.

Overall, there are many ways to use your knitting skills to support Ukraine, whether it’s through charitable knitting patterns, traditional Ukrainian-inspired patterns, or by supporting Ukrainian yarn producers. Every little bit helps, and together we can make a difference.

The Instagram post about the blankets included an address in Spain. That’s the only one I have seen.
