Spool knitting, or French knitting, or whatever you want to call it when you “knit” a long chain with a device other than knitting needles, is a great way to get kids started with yarn crafts who might not be coordinated or patient enough to knit with knitting needles yet. It’s also a fast way to produce fabric that doesn’t have to be used just as a long strand.
Check out Vickie Howell’s super fun cat headband made with a long strand of chain knitting (hers was made with the Clover Wonder Knitter, but you can use whatever, or even make your own spool knitter) looped and sewn together, then jazzed up with felt ears, eyes, nose and whiskers.
You could take this same idea a lot of different ways depending on what kind of animal your kid loves. And it’s adorable with a tail but you could make a “plain” one for a grownup or older kid who doesn’t want a headband with a tail. Though I think it’s kind of awesome. Either way.
Do you use spool knitting in your crafts? I’d love to hear about it.
