Watching movies is a classic activity to do while you are knitting, and so much the better if you can knit something that shows off your love of film at the same time you are watching a movie.
That’s just what you get with the Film Reel Socks pattern from Alex Parker Mooney, which I came across on Ravelry the other day and just had to share.
These socks use three colors to make the film reel style stripes, and they’re available in six different sizes, with a foot circumference ranging from 7 to 10.75 inches, or 18 to 27.5 cm (those are pretty much all adult sizes).
They’re worked from the cuff down using stranded colorwork and stripes, and there are four different heel “genres” to choose from:
- Thriller includes a cut-in afterthought heel
- Sci-fi/fantasy is a forethought heel (knit at the end but you put in waste yarn to account for where it goes instead of cutting the stitches)
- Action/adventure is a German short row heel
- Romcom is a classic wrap and turn short row heel
Of course you always have the option to use whatever kind of heel you like, no matter what the pattern says, but this is a fun way to give you some different options and possibly allow you to learn a new way of doing a heel if you wan to try something new (the socks are otherwise the same).
The designer says the pattern is rated PG-13 for “stranded colorwork, thematic elements and mild crude humor,” and if that doesn’t make you want to knit them I honestly don’t know what will.
In addition the pattern is available for free on Ravelry, and this one has been around for a while so you can browse through more than 300 finished sock projects to find the perfect colorway for you.

Waves Socks– Free Knitting Pattern
These cozy Waves Socks are a lovely choice if you want a handknit sock pattern with a little texture but nothing too fussy. The gentle scallop stitch creates a soft wave effect, making them pretty enough for gifting but still practical for everyday wearing. They’re worked in light worsted weight yarn, so they knit up a little faster than fine sock yarn socks too.
Ladies Lace Top Socks – Free Knitting Pattern
These Ladies Lace Top Socks are a sweet step up from a basic handknit sock, with a delicate lace cuff that adds just the right amount of pretty. The rest of the sock is worked mainly in stocking stitch, so it’s a nice project for knitters who are ready to try sock shaping without making the whole thing overly complicated. A lovely handmade gift idea, especially if you use a soft 4-ply sock yarn.
The other day I saw a post from
