Vote for an Indie Dyer in Martha Stewart’s Contest

You may have seen information on Facebook or elsewhere online about Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards. This is a quest by Martha and the editors of her magazines to find 10 rising stars of small business, many of whom naturally are in the handmade marketplace.

Part of the award is the Audience Choice, a popularity contest that will net the winner $10,000 for her or his business, a spot in Martha Stewart Living magazine and a place of honor at the awards ceremony. You can check out all the finalists and vote for anyone you like, but you should know there’s an indie dyer on the list, Jill Draper of Jill Draper Makes Stuff.

She dyes yarn in the Hudson Valley and some of her wool is sourced from local sheep. She also sells knitting patterns. Her work is beautiful and well worth the support of this contest! Yo can vote daily between now and September 24; an e-mail address is required.

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about a pair of handmade bed socks, isn’t there? They are practical, pretty, and just the sort of project that feels like it belongs beside a cup of tea, a good film, and a basket of wool that is pretending not to be overflowing.

This vintage Bed Socks knitting pattern is one of those sweet little patterns that still feels useful today. Originally from the Jaeger Hand-Knit Series No. 44, the design features a simple garter-stitch foot, a ribbed cuff, eyelet holes, a crochet chain tie, and little tassel-style pom-poms at the front. A cozy wool blend, soft acrylic, or washable yarn would all work depending on whether you are making these for everyday use or as a special gift.

I especially love that this pattern has that “giftable” quality without being a massive project. It is small enough to feel achievable, but still special enough that the finished pair looks thoughtful. And let’s be honest, handmade socks with pom-poms are always going to beat a last-minute candle from the supermarket.
